3 or 4 Years of Foreign Language

The selection of available Spanish courses at my school ranges from 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, and AP 9/10. Last year as a freshman while taking 3/4, my teacher recommended for me to skip 5/6 and move onto 7/8 as a sophomore. This would present a dilemma, as it would put me in a position to finish AP Spanish Language and Culture in 11th grade, leaving me without a 4th year of foreign language. My school does not offer AP Spanish Literature as another option, since I am the only 10th grader moving on to 7/8.

Should I skip 5/6 as my teacher recommends and only take 3 years of foreign language, or is it worth it to go a full 4 years? I know admissions officers say that 4 years of language in the same subject is desired, but I feel that 5/6 would move a bit slow for my pace. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

If you complete AP Spanish you would have fulfilled almost every college’s recommended preparation. Foreign languages is unique in that colleges will consider level reached regardless of number of years taked to achieve that level. If the teacher thinks you’d be OK skipping ahead, and you are comfortable with it, there is no reason not to. See also:

^ that’s true: ap counts as level5  … Even if you skipped a year ahead. It means you’ll complete the requirement by junior year and will have a free slot for whatever is your passion, or a fun class just for the heck of it (current events, shop, culinary arts, Theater tech…)

Alright, thanks for the guidance @skieurope and @MYOS1634
