Admissions Rate Drops for Class of 2015 | The Cornell Daily Sun

I read that the school's yield is usually around 50%. Then why would they have a waitlist large enough to fill an entire class? What's the logic behind this new strategy?

Last year, Duke had enough on the WL to fill the freshman class twice over. I think it gives them more choices if they go to the waitlist. On May 1, they can see they need an oboe player or a prospective classics major or a blonde kid from Arkansas–or whatever they didn’t end up with after the admitted students sort themselves out. The numbers are daunting, but sometimes it does work out.

In my opinion, I think that colleges like to have really low admit rates. They protect those low rates by having large waitlists. Do the kids admitted off the waitlists go into the acceptance rate? It’s one way to look more competitive. Cornell hasn’t taken kids off waitlists in 2 years. Princeton took about 160 - I believe - but their acceptance rate looked amazingly low. It’s a game.

Oh goodness…

Well, hopefully this waitlist purgatory will be over soon.

waitlisted students do not count into admitted %
Some schools like to use waitlist more realistically (students have more of a chance to actually get in via waitlist) so that the admittance looks low. For any ivy this year, not so much. It’s also there to protect the class size in case a freak disaster occurs and yield is ridiculously low one year.

Cornell didn’t even use the waitlist last year.

Yeah, I just found those stats on Cornell’s website:
