Does anyone have a 4.0 at BU?
What do you need to make the dean’s list?
How difficult is a 3.7?

A 3.7 is very doable. It's hard to get a 4.0 because there's no A+; the top of the grading scale is 4.0.

I think Dean's List is 3.5.

It depends on colleges. A dean's list in ENG is usually around a 3.3 -- lower than most colleges b/c the bad curve in some math/science classes (especially Calc II).

I can confirm that no one in SMG had a 4.0 the year I graduated (highest was around a 3.8) and doubt that very many (if any) people do in other schools.

Dean's list does vary from school to school. I think the cutoff was 3.5 for CAS and 3.3 for SMG when I was in school.

Considering the average of BU as an entire school is around a 3.1, a 4.0 is not easy to get. I was speaking to a college councilor the other day she told me that each year the valedictorian in BU ENG has pretty much all A's except one A- (3.7/4.0), which theoretically is not a 4.0 but still considered a 4.0 since gpa does round up.

If you graduate with a 3.2 above you would be on the cum laude list; if you are a 3.4 above you're considered to be on the something (magna?) cum laude list; if you are a 3.8 or above then you should be in the top 5% of your class.

The Latin Honors policy for all schools:

Cum Laude: Top 5%
Magna Cum Laude: Next 10% (top 15%)
Summa Cum Laude: Next 15% (top 30%)

The GPA cutoff varies from school to school and from year to year. For instance, the cutoff for Summa Cum Laude in SMG when I graduated was 3.58.

Does anyone have a list of what GPA you need to make the Deans list at each college? SMG, CAS, CGS, COM, etc

ryan - you reversed the names. Summa is 5, magna is 10 and cum laude is 15. All are achievable, with variations of course depending on your college and your personal choices in classes.

Right. My apologies. That's what I get for typing while on the phone at work.

Most of your questions (and the rest of the questions on this board) can be answered here.

how hard is a 3.5 at SHA, if anyone knows?

I only know anecdotally that grades at SHA are not that tough. It's such a small college, it's not like that info is common.

DS has a 3.52 GPA in the College of Fine Arts...music performance. It is unlikely that he will be graduating with any honor's designation. In his major he has close to a 4.0 (but as noted, not really possible because there is no A+....and few students get all A's).

I nearly (.02 away) had a 4.0 the semester I only took 13 credits... if I could have a schedule like that all the time, it wouldn't be that hard! But with 25 hours of class time/week, it's hard to stave off those A minuses.

Please, please don't choose your college based on the GPA you think you'll be able to maintain there.

How difficult would it be to maintain a 3.5 in COM? (Major-Journalism and Minor-Economics or Sociology)

If you're a good student at the college level, which is an assumption, then you can do that. It's weird; some people say their COM grades are higher than their CAS ones while others say the reverse. My kid has a 3.8 or so in COM and CAS.

Each class has its different standards but, for example, it's common in writing classes that you get graded on a draft, then a revision, and it's clear that professors generally reward improvement.

In SMG it's 3.30 or above. I know because I've made it once in 5 semesters. I think i'll make it this semester (my 6th). For most people it gets easier to do the further on you go because you take more classes in your major. For some people they start out strong and keep going.

What does it take to get a 4.0 for biomed engineering?
if you manage your time wisely, etc. is a 4.0 attainable?

It takes all A's.

Seriously, odds are you'll get an A- somewhere.

I meant how hard is it to get A's and A-'s for biomed eng.?
(even with good time management, etc.)
