[5 in AP & 700 in SAT II]
vs.
[4 in AP & 760 in SAT II]

This is US History, btw. Which one is better valued in college admission? Is it the latter since SAT IIs are required but AP is not?

I'd say any difference between the two is negligible, really. =/

highopes, I think you're wrong. SAT II is much more important

But a 760 isn't hugely better than a 700, and any difference is basically cancelled out by the AP score anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most colleges don't factor AP scores into admissions decisions, right? In that case, a 760 would be better valued.

the 760 is technically a little stronger but IF the adcom did notice the correlating AP score i think they would perhaps cancel out. Regardless i think the difference between a 700 and 760 will not have a significant impact on your admission/rejection.

It really, really won't make much of a difference.

Interesting.. Thanks guys!

710 + 4 > 700 + 5

Because AP score doesn't matter (beside from those minor AP/National Scholar things)

SAT II's since they're required.

second one... for sure.

Yes the higher SATII score is better

well i took world history (not us) and i got a 5/760.

At my school, nearly everyone takes the world SATII and i've found that generally people who have gotten 700+ have gotten fives on the AP exam. I know that both the world and US SATIIs have similar curves so I would expect the same to hold true for US hist.

thus, if you haven't taken the us history SAT/AP, then I would say don't worry. Just shoot for a 700+ on the SAT and the 5 will come. This way, you get the best of both worlds!

i mean i guess you'd prob want the higher SAT2...but AP scores are used in class placement, which can be very helpful..

This makes me happy since I got a 4 on APUSH with a 740 on the SAT II. I was thinking that the difference between a 4 and a 5 is more noticeable than that between a 700 and 740 (or 760 or whatever) but it makes sense that the SAT II would carry more weight.

I would rather have the 5, actually. Some universities only grant credit for 5s (if at all), and I would think that colleges value the AP score better as it is more analytical, especially for history, rather than just memorization. I'm sure the 5 would pretty much excuse the 700, and it would be equal to the other scenario (adcoms would just think, oh, maybe screwed up on an essay or something). Since the two are fairly comparable in college admissions (easily explained by just bad test day, then logically, the higher AP score is preferable for after college admissions.
