for many days ive been practicing only the critical reading section, yet ive only been able to reach 650 and a majority of my scores ranged from 590 to 630. im beginning to think i can never improve no matter how hard i try. this range is probably too low for yale, but i wanted to know if it really is. do they look at overall sat score or each invidividual section? im beginning to get worried and i think im losing hope. plz reply...........

I have excellent news: 630s are my speciality.

I got into Yale EA with a 630 math score. I'm not a minority, not an athlete, not legacy, not poor, not rich, and I didn't cure cancer. I am from Georgia, though, so that might have affected the decision to some degree (but I doubt it had a significant role). Scores aren't everything; go ahead and apply if everything else is Yale caliber. You might just be pleasantly suprised...

HEY! You're from ATL, too. I'm from Cobb. Where are you from?

My CR scores were bad too to start with. On my sophomore PSAT, I got a 590. I went up naturally 50 points on my junior year PSAT. I think all the practice multiple choice AP English Language passages I did really helped my reading skills.. though I didn't get a 5 :p, once I got back to SAT passages, everything seemed really simple. I ended up with a 760 on my SAT.

thx. ill try to improve my cr significantly, but if not, i hope my other things are yale caliber.

590-630 would be on the low end for Yale, but you never know . . . stats definitely do not make up all of your app.

Just keep practicing, my sophomore year PSAT was a 56 (yeah I know, it was bad and I didn't prep), but my junior year one jumped to a 73 (one reason was because they took out analogies and made the passages better) and I got a 740 on the real SAT. So, practice does help :)

Practice reading things--books, periodicals, whatever. Practice with AP English Language stuff. It helps. CR scores ALWAYS improve "naturally" anyway. Try the ACT if it's that problematic.

I'm from Forsyth.

Cool. You're from the "rich boonies" LOL.

Yeah, we and Fayette are duking it out for that title...

The extreme conservatism is annoying, but I won't have to deal with it much longer.

You can't complain about extreme conservatism until your school system tries to put "evolution advisory stickers" in Bio books. Gosh, we've been sued sooooo many times this year.

haha that is pretty bad. Although living in Ohio, the state that threw the election to bush (twice) isn't a whole lot better. I'm glad I live near cleveland

I'd recommend amplifying your hook to make up for the scores though.

Rhapsody, I live outside of Cincinnati, OH.

ahaha extreme conservatism? I live near Cleveland OH - specifically, in Cuyahoga County, the most liberal part of the state. Stephanie "Bush is a thief" Tubbs-Jones is my rep. gag.

Cuyahoga's the dark blue county.

You guys will love glorious, liberal New England! :)

Isn't New Hampshire really conservative?

It's the most conservative state in New England, for sure. I live in Massachusetts, and there is a huge difference between the two states, but I wouldn't consider it that conservative, no. In November 2004 I went to New Hampshire to get people registered to vote and encourage them to go to the polls and such, and you could tell the atmosphere was really intense and divided. The state did end up going to Kerry, though. They're much more conservative than we are for sure, but as a whole New England is still really nice and liberal.

sonata, do you go to shaker? I'm from mentor
