I have a 2320 on the SAT with 800 in both R and W. However, my highest math score I have ever gotten is 740. The other two times I took it, I got a 720 and a 6600 (eek). I also got a 790 on the Mat II test (yeah I know...it's the 78th percentile). I have always gotten good grades in math (A-A+) and go to a math and science-focused school.

Should I not even bother with MIT anymore? I want to apply to MIT because of their linguistics program specifically. It's arguably the best in the world.

No reason not to apply. 740 isn’t in the top range, but there are people who have gotten in with scores lower than that. Especially since you are looking to study linguistics, I don’t see that score as a detriment.

If you get all scores 700 or above you passed the first part of the application process. MIT is interested in the rest of your application much more than how much over a 700 you scored. You should definitely apply unless your scores are the only thing going for you. I got in with a 710 math SAT and a 760 math I SAT Subject Test.

MIT says they don’t care as long as you have at least 700s and I am inclined to believe them. You’re fine. Completely fine. You can move on and never think about those scores again.

A 2320 and a 2400 both show “you’re capable of doing the work”. The adcoms will see that way and will move on to other parts of your application.

Yeah, don’t worry. I think my highest Math I score was a 720, but I had a 800 Math II and also a 5 in Calculus BC (along with straight A’s in all of my honors/AP math classes in HS), so that Math I score meant nothing. Although I think an important part was played by my research and my recs.

I was an MIT linguistics major. SAT I Math score: 700. I got 690 on my math SAT II the first time around and retook for a 760. I don’t remember my chemistry SAT II score, but it was probably 750 plus or minus 10.

If your scores are above 700, they’re good. Everything else matters so much more. In my personal experience, I know that my essays were the deciding factor.

Yeah, I got in with that math score and my CR and W scores were not even in the 700s, neither were my subject tests, so don’t stress too much about your test scores.
