To be quite frank, that 580 is still going to be a problem. In terms of importance, I would say that most schools would rank the SAT sections, from most to least critical, as CR, M, and then W. No matter what you major in, critical reading skills will be essential.
For example,

The main objectives of Math 200 are:
-to teach the students how to properly write proofs in a formal, mathematical language
-to expose the students to several different areas of mathematics, sampling through problems the intrinsic beauty of this field
-to expand the experience of students with problem solving, offering problems that are more challenging than the standard exercises found in a textbook
-to review and build upon some topics covered in other math classes such as calculus, linear algebra, abstract algebra, combinatorics, number theory, geometry, real analysis (however, prior knowledge of advanced math math topics is not required)

Also, you will be competing with applicants that have 700+ in each section, in addition to amazing EC’s and awards. Unless you can present some compelling reason why you should be accepted over the kid who is exactly like you except with 200 extra points on CR, Vandy and Brown might be a bit of a reach. However, you can still try (if possible, retake SAT I. I know Vandy does score choice, not so sure about Brown).

Sorry, I agree with ojo above, that 580 will stand out like a sore thumb at top-tier, highly selective schools like Brown. Vandy may cut you a little more slack, but it still presents a negative to an otherwise strong application. Your competition will be getting scores of 750+.

You have two very solid components of your application, GPA and ECs, but not the third. This overall score will definitely not make you competitive for Brown or any of the Ivies and Vandy, to a slightly lesser extent. Good luck on improving your test scores!

Thanks, I already have multiple full rides (thank you NMSF) so I think I’m just going to take some Advil to make me not feel so bad about that eye sore

I’m also in SGA and have held multiple offices…held an office in Science O, Rho Kappa, and NTHS as well,

I’m in Latin club, NHS, NEHS, FBLA, Optimist, Key Club, and am in the running for the State youth community service award (already won county and districts)

That will not go away
There are kids who score 800 on CR and don’t major in anything even remotely close to the humanities. Raise your scores and you become a pretty solid applicant.

Brown is very unlikely. How did you get 580/780/620 and National Merit? That’s a 1980 SAT, but your PSAT must have been high, which suggests that if you take the SAT again you could score much higher.

I know you can do the math. The few students Brown accepts with your CR score are impact athletes, top donor’s children, movie stars and the like:

Brown also takes little interest in your potential major, most kids switch majors several times before they graduate.

If you did a 660 on the PSAT, why haven’t you retaken the SAT? I don’t think a 660 will get you into Brown, but it would get you in the range for Vandy level schools.
