Will good CR + W make up for lousy M? :(

I'm pretty happy with my overall score, but I'm really starting to worry about my breakdown. My SAT is as follows:

800 CR
630 M LOL
800 W (10 + 78)

I was initially pretty psyched because the 2230 sounds nice and was above my goal of 2200. However, a few kids at my super competitive school have been freaking me out by saying that schools really aren't going to like the math, which is 170 points lower than the other 2 sections :/

What do you CCers think? I'm a senior, so I really have no chance to make it up since apps are due wicked soon. I'd still like to hear everyone's opinions, though, so I can prepare myself for rejections if necessary :( Will strong reading and writing balance out the crappy math? Or will it just look ridiculous? I have to admit, I laughed when I got the score because the discrepancy really is funny...

I'm not looking at a math or science major (obviously haha) but rather international relations/African studies. If it matters, I'm looking at schools like Tufts (LOVE OF MY LIFE), Brandeis, Smith, Barnard, and BU, among others. Thanks guys!

Your scores are competitive for Tufts(Where the median is around a 1420 M+R, whereas you have a 1430. Their mean SAT cumulative tends to be around 2160 so you’re well off there too) I wouldn’t worry too much… colleges know people have their strengths and weaknesses.

Yeah, I’m trying to keep that in mind. Tufts <3 <3 <3 It’s not that I think my score is bad per se but more that I think the 170 point discrepancy could be kind of a red flag. But thanks! :)

Bump? It’s Christmas!

For the schools you’re applying to, you shouldn’t have a problem at all. It could only hurt you if you have really weak ECs. Also, having a 630 in Math may hurt you if you are of asian ethnicity, but overall, you have a clear shot.

No, I’m white, so I guess that won’t matter. My ECs are alright, so I guess I’ll try not to worry for now. I’m just paranoid that schools will think my English scores were luck and the math is really representative of my ability… hope not!

@Diana2012 - You’re fine then. You are doing international relations/African studies so schools won’t look down upon your math score. At best, hopefully you have good grades in your math classes to offset the math score, but it really doesn’t matter. You seem very passionate, so I am willing to bet your essay was very strong, especially at Tufts! I hope you get in!

why tufts is ur dream school?

what do u like in it? :)

I’m in the same boat as you–800CR, 650M, 800W. As I understand it, it would be bad were you applying to polytechnic schools but it’s quite a good score for LACs/universities.

doctoribach-- programs, location, campus, people, I could go on and on. Why do you ask?

MissGen-- glad to hear it. Sort of a funny situation we’re in, but I’ve been hearing that once you’re over 2200 the breakdown isn’t super critical; it won’t necessarily help, but it won’t hurt either. Good luck to you with apps!

I don’t think it would hurt much…but Math and Reading are the 2 most important sections to admission by far.
