wow, asian/black/white etc...., quite honestly many minority applicants are better qualified than "majority" students, but at the same time, it is hard to argue against the fact that colleges offer spots for minorities even when they are not as well qualified as a white student, or any other majority race, as the case may be at a given school. BTW, there is already a huge thread about affirmative action, so we shouldn't go into it here. Don't take offense at people saying minority students aren't as well qualified, because either a. they aren't, or b. they are more qualified, nobody can judge them without knowing their transcripts and a school's interests.

thanks for the clever comment mr. smarty pants... thanks for making sure i knew that everyone DID get the point even if it was misworded

No problem, buddy. Sparty pants? Okkkkkk?

he won't get into to top schools. maybe MIT where it doesnt matter if you can read or write english.

A very great emphasis is placed on Verbal and Writing test scores in the Ivy League. In a college geared towards the liberal arts tradition (aka all of the Ivies), being able to read and write well is very important. No offense, but with a Writing score that low, your friend clearly doesn't have much ability in English.

There are loads of international applicants who can read and write very well in English (720+/750+ test scores), and they are the ones who most often recieve admit letters. As much as Ivy League admissions officers don't want to say this, if you can't do reasonably well on the SAT II Writing or SAT I Verbal, even if you are the most diligent and conscientious student in the world, they know you would have difficulty with the workload at their schools.

If this person still has time, he/she should definietly try to review the SAT 2 Writing book, or get a tutor. I'm sure if he/she got 800s on other tests they can definetly do better with some preparation. If not, still apply- maybe try to explain weak points in the section "please write anything else we should know" or even in an essay or teacher recommendation. If an English teacher writes how he gets great grades, and tries very hard this might have an impact on the admisssions decesision. Good Luck :).
