I moved to a new state in August of last year and really didn’t know anyone in my new school. I also didn’t know how to join clubs and sports. I don’t want to make excuses, but the process of moving just got in the way and by the time I got used to things, it was already too late. I ended up only being in jazz band and ping pong this year as the band teacher recommended me for the band and a friend told me I should just come in one day and I was able to join. (I also started volunteering) I should have been more active about joining and trying new things by joining more clubs my first year at high school but I just wasn’t thinking about it at the time that I should have.
If I were to get material from teachers who run the clubs to get as prepared or even more prepared than current members over the summer, would my chances at an elite school still be hurt?
I plan to join as many clubs and be in as many leadership positions as I possibly can next year. (Scholastic bowl, math team, science olympiad, varsity ping pong, hopefully JV basketball, maybe newspaper club, Spanish club for the main purpose of being the president, band council(leader?), etc.) I’m also auditioning for a state honor band, an all-state band, and will join another jazz band separate from school if time permits.
What are some clubs that you guys would recommend me to join? Anything else I can do over the summer to increase my chances?
Sorry if I’m asking some obvious things or being silly.
Thanks!
