^_^ Chance me UChicago (or university of similar standing)

Hi guys,
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am a Asian-Canadian male from Vancouver. My school is ranked #1 in Western Canada and my class size is around 180. I will be applying Early Action to Chicago for a Sociology major next month but I need a rough estimate of my chances.

Academics:
-93 GPA (based on 100 scale) (top 10%)
-National AP Scholar (five 5s on Micro, Macro, Human Geo, Psychology, Chinese)
-I am taking 6 APs this year (Statistics, Calc BC, Physics, English, Euro Hist, Art History)
-SAT I (one sitting, not taking again) 2230:
740 Math
690 CR
800 Writing
-SAT IIs (will be taking in Nov, but may not send to UChicago as they do not require it)

ECs and Awards (I am counting on this as my trump card)
-Student Government leader (President last year, Head of Arts this year)
-President of the Art Club
-Chief of Visuals for Yearbook
-Chief of Visuals for School art magazine
-Artist of the year (had pieces featured in 2 Vancouver galleries)
-Founder and President of small import-export company. Operated for 2 years. Sponsors various local organizations and has donated over 2000$.
-VP of a Vancouver based charity. Part of executive board that raised over $60,000 in building schools in Asia.
-Very strong art supplement

Other stuff
-Provincial level rugby player (will not be playing in university, should I mention this on my Common App?)
-Good recommendation letters and essay

I think it should be a pretty strong application (besides the 690 CR). Please be honest, what would further improve application and what detracts from it? What are my chances to UChicago? I am also considering UC Berkeley, UCLA and Columbia during regular decisions so it would be great if you can give me a chance for those as well.
Thank you guys!

You are an international student (unless you have a US citizenship of green card). This means that you will be competing with thousands of other applications from ALL AROUND THE WORLD. The average chance for an int. student at a school like UChicago is 3-4%, maybe a little higher.

If you are applying for financial aid, this will hurt your chances even more (or improve it if you can pay full-tuition). UChicago is need-aware for int. students, so applying for fin. aid will be taken into consideration and affect your chances. https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/international/

No one can accurately predict anyone’s chances. I’m just giving you a dose of reality as you seem to think that you have a “strong application.” No offense, but your numbers are very average. SAT is in average range, GPA is average (although it is an international GPA, so they will take that into consideration). Your EC’s are great, but you must assume other applicants have similar stats, since you are international (think of the crazy kids from China and Japan, who you’ll be competing with). Your AP scores are great. Although, SAT II scores are usually more important than AP scores. You can ask around forums and teachers, and they will tell you that SAT II scores are more “effective” than APs. Not taking them will certainly put you at a disadvantage against others.

Good luck with your application, but don’t expect anything (not because of your app, because UChicago is one of the top schools in the world). I’m not trying to be a dick; I’m just being realistic. Hopefully you’ll get in.

p.s. The UC system put int. chances at around 10%, but they DO NOT offer financial aid to international students. Just keep that in mind. Columbia is similar to UChicago.

^My bad, UCs are at 15% for 2013 int. applicants. It went down from last year though, so I wouldn’t expect 15 for this year.

Thank you, I was hoping to read something like that. What do you think would be a match for me then?

If all really depends. If UChicago is your “dream school,” then definitely apply EA or ED (whichever it offers) to it. You really never know what’ll happen; all you have to lose is the 80 bucks for the app.

Disregarding financial aspects, here’s a list of schools that I think are “matches” or at least low reach/high match:

UCLA, USC, NYU (I really think you’ll get into NYU, they love kids like you), UIUC, UCSD, UT Austin. Keep in mind that top 20 schools cannot be classified as matches or safeties unless you cure cancer and end world hunger.

the only thing you can really do to improve your application is to really nail those SAT IIs in November (apparently UChicago takes them at that date) and really work on your essays. If you want, I’ll take a look at it, and give you some tips. Don’t worry, I’m not going to steal your essay topics, lol.

Sure, thanks for your insight. I am going over all my essays on Monday with my counsellor for editing so I can forward you that after Monday.

Alright, just send it whenever you want to send it.

Good luck.

Any more thoughts?

As a current student in uchicago, I am really worried about your application. 93 GPA is not high and your SAT score are mid ranged. I agree with collegeboardjaja; I think you should apply for some universities such as university of British Columbia, langara college, SFU(good university, search it up) or UCSD. Again, don’t apply to columbia, they will destroy you in your interview. Any more questions don’t be shy to ask.

Seriously dude or are you trolling me with that one post count
