A C in one class

I know I’m a sophomore and it’s 1 1/2 years before I apply, but I was wondering how badly does a C in bio hon affect my future admissions. I had all B’s for all my other subjects so my uw gpa is a 3.1.

What’s your weighted GPA? A single C is not going to kill you but your low GPA will. You don’t have a single A? B’s are bad, try to aim for all A’s.

It’s a 3.19 I didn’t take any honors, this year I’m taking two.
I had all B in my core classes and an A in my elective so it does not really count.
@hsseniior2

Yeah, I don’t want to sound discouraging but that is a low GPA. That one C won’t make you get rejected, but your GPA will. What colleges do you plan on going to?

Don’t give up though, you are just a sophomore. Colleges like to see a rising trend so try to aim for all A’s.

@hsseniior2 probably apply to one ivy league just for kicks, but my state schools are exactly the best so really any State Uni OOS or a okay private. I don’t have any preferences because I want to see if I can finish off this year with a 3.5 so I have more options.

I’m with hsseniior2, the C doesn’t matter so much as the course load and GPA. Your GPA is pretty low, and if you aren’t taking at least all Honors, your course load is fairly light as well.

You really really need to focus on getting A’s in your classes. I wouldn’t apply to an Ivy as you’d be wasting your money, even Valedictorians get rejected from Ivies.

As for your state school, I’m having a bit of trouble with your wording. Are your state schools good or not? If not and you’re looking at out of state, you have a whole other issue with the low GPA in that you might not get much scholarship money. going OOS gets expensive.

No don’t apply to any ivys, they reject kids who have had all A’s in their ENTIRE high school career and not even a single B.
What state do you live in?

@fireonmytoast I have one ivy league school and one or two state colleges and that’s pretty much it. I will most likely not apply to an ivy league college in all seriousness because it’s not worth the money and time. I really rather not go to my state college, but I most likely will have to. I have a younger sibling too so I really want to get at least some or the bare minimum of scholarship money.

@hsseniior2 NJ

Rutgers? That is a great school

I hate to tell you but you would not get into any of the top four state universities in our state with a 3.19 unless you are a recruited athlete. Where do you live? You can see the GPA you need for each school by googling “name of school common data set.” You need to be in the 50th percentile to have a reasonable chance at admission. You have time to get your GPA up and there are probably schools in your state that will accept a B average but not the flagship university.

@OspreyCV22 live in Pinceton area and I definitely cannot play a sport
@hsseniior2 I know it is but I really want to go OOS

I didn’t mean to imply that a solid B average is bad. It’s not reasonable to expect to get into an ivy league school with it or even a flagship state school. There are tons of schools you can get into but you will probably pay full tuition at most. You have lots of time to read up and get the best test scores you can possibly get. Good luck.

@OspreyCV22 no it’s okay I understand compared to a lot of other students at my school I’m very low
Thanks for your help :slight_smile:
