A classic chance thread from an anxious senior

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Applied to Computer Engineering.

GPA: 3.95 on Michigan’s scale. 4.0 the first trimester of this year.

1510 SAT

No class rank. Somewhere within the top 20% or so given the school profile, but I couldn’t say where.

Freshman classes: we didn’t have any options for honors/ aps. everyone took the basics.
Sophmore: again, no APs offered. Took max number of honors courses allowed.
Junior: only 2 APs offered. I took one of them (chem), and again max number of honors courses.
Senior: 3 APS (calc, cs, physics) and one honors (french). Usually only 3 honors and aps are allowed, but I got special permission for 4.

Sports: Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Swimming, Crew

Clubs/EC’s: Conservation Club, Alliance, Astronomy, and started the school’s animal rights club (something I’m crazy passionate about); have taken voice lessons since grade 7; tutor peers at my school in math and science; assist in the pre-k during my free period (my school is a private k-12); give tours to families visiting my school

Awards: Winner in my class for public speaking at my school (judging the competition this year), National Merit Commended; National French Competition 8th in state last two years (placed well freshman year too but I don’t remember the exact place); National French Honors Society

Volunteer: Spent last two summers volunteering at the local hospital + doing a little work at some children’s science programs, active in school’s community service group

Essay: I’m a good writer. I think it was decent.

Supplements: Put a lot of time in. I’d say they’re good(?)

Recs: chem teacher, english teacher. I have high hopes.

Income: I don’t know exactly. around $140k. My parents have about $260k saved for my college, so I didn’t apply for FA.

Etc: White girl, southern maine. small prep school. relatively competitive (I know everyone says that, but honestly!).

Thanks so much!

As an accepted student in-state, I would say you have a good chance. Everything you listed is great, but out-of-state is still very competitive. Keep your options open, but I wish you best of luck!! GO BLUE!

OOS applying to CoE wih 3.95/1510 would be a low to mid reach. How is our Math section score?

760 math

The CoE admission rate last year was right below 21% which includes in-state students. OOS admission rate would be in the mid teens. Your chance should be right around or slightly better than average OOS applicants.

There are very few applicants from Maine, and you have an advantage as a female in engineering. Good luck!

Thank you for all of the responses!!

There are states with very few enrolled undergraduate in the whole school. As long as they have a few from each state to cover the whole map, they don’t really care. I think one state only has 2 students.

That is probably Wyoming. If the 2 students from Wyoming are current seniors, UM would certainly admit at least one incoming freshman. But the point is well taken.

There are 6 states with less than 10 students (34 from these 6 states combined) from all years. If anything, only the top 1 or 2 candidates from those states may see some benefit, if any.
