D is considering the Global Village LLC and the International LLC. I believe both are in Foster. She is not a party girl but doesn't want to feel isolated so is looking at "alternative" options. She enjoys a social life that doesn't include need to include alcohol (or at least doesn't mean she has to drink--friends okay...)

Her first choice will be an Honors floor-if she is admitted to Honors.

Can someone explain the difference between these two options? Is one more social than the other? Based on posts here the Northwest dorms are the biggest party dorms so that's not really her style. If she was to live in on of the LLC's in Foster will she feel a bit like an outsider because of that choice?

I guess I'm just asking the current students (or parents of current students) to weigh in with their opinions on these two options.

Or just let me know your general opinions for a girl like mine.

My son lives in Foster (Magee), which is one of 4 smaller dorm buildings that make up the Foster Quad, along with one larger building (Harper). He is not in an LLC, I believe that is one of the other smaller buildings in the Quad. Although Foster is in the NW neighborhood, I think that it is the most "peaceful" in that neighborhood. I believe that is because of the smaller buildings. McNutt and Briscoe are large complexes, and from what my son has told me, McNutt seems to be the big party place. I know that drinking goes on in probably all of the dorms, but I don't think parties get out of hand in Foster because of the smaller size of the buildings. My son likes Foster and it does have A/C, carpeting, etc., which some of the other dorms do not have. I believe Collins is also considered to be in the NW neighborhood, but it is really not that close to the other 3 dorms I mentioned. I don't think Collins is known as a party place.

Foster is also one of the closest dorms to the university's main buildings. It's only a 5 minute walk (at the most) from the SPEA, business school, and psychology buildings, and they also hold many classes in one of the buildings in the quad (during the day only) for freshmen--primarily the english composition and english as a second language courses. They also offer some of the GLLC symposium courses there.

for a list of those classes for next semester.

I think they try and locate a lot of the new international students there. My guess is that they do so in order for them to try and meet people at the university who are there from the same country--and also so they will be more "central" to the main campus. All in all, it's probably one of the best choices for a dorm for incoming freshmen.

P.S. My son was in McNutt--and he said it was definitely the "party" dorm--too many "parties" in his opinion--although he also said that he didn't think Indiana University qualifies as a top 10 party schools compared to what his friends at other schools have told him about theirs.

Thanks parents. I lived in Foster many, many years ago(the main building, Harper, was single sex if that tells you how long ago it was ;) ) so am familiar with the advantages of the location, but the reputation of the NW as a party place is a bit of a problem for D. I think at this point she'll choose something else as a first choice, but use the language dorms as backups.

I would still LOVE to hear from a couple of students--Wavarian, A2--are you out there?

I am not sure of the differences between International and Global village, but Foster is a great dorm. I don't think there will be a problem because she doesn't drink, I don't drink and am getting along fine with everyone in Eigenmann and have friends in Foster who dont drink. They happen to be in the honors floor there.
