I’m trying to finalize my schedule for the rest of high school (I’m a sophomore), and I have a couple questions:
Is a fourth year of a foreign language really needed? I’m in Spanish II as a sophomore and it’s probably my least favorite class, I would really rather not take a fourth year. I plan on taking three.
I’m trying to decide between AP Chem and IB HL physics, any thoughts on that?
I think it depends on what schools you’re looking at, but the more competitive ones will want to see four years. Also, from what I’ve seen, foreign language classes really do get more engaging/interesting/fulfilling the farther you go, just because the range of ideas you’re able to communicate gets so much wider. So don’t write it off as your least favorite class just yet.
AP Chem and IB HL Physics are two very different classes. I think it would depend a lot on what you thought of the Chem or Physics classes you’ve taken in the past, and how much you love math. I’ve heard from people taking IB HL Physics that it’s a challenging class, but depending on whether you love or hate math that could be a good or bad thing.
I’m mostly only looking at UC schools and not really anything more competitive than that, so I’m not really hoping to get into any super selective schools.
I like my regular chem class so far. I haven’t taken physics, I know I’ll be taking honors physics at some point though. I do really like math though, I’m a total math nerd, which makes me think I’ll like physics.
What UCs? Berkley and UCLA, yes you really do need to take 4 years to be competitive at that tier. If you just find it not intresting, it might be worth the pain to bear through it because it really does improve your chances. If you’re getting a super low grade, that’s another story.
I think with AP Chem and IB Physics it’s really just a matter of which you find more intresting. You might want to talk to someone at your school to see how the workloads/difficulty compare though and take that into consideration. Also something to think about might be which one you would rather have college credit for, if you go to a school that accepts it.
I’m not that interested in UCLA or Berkeley, I’m thinking more like UCSD, UCI, UCSC.
I don’t think I would have a super low grade, although it was my lowest grade last year (A-). Right now I have a 95 in Spanish II.
I would also like to have the space available in my schedule my senior year so that I can take another class, it would be one I’m interested in but probably honors or AP.
It has crossed my mind to take both AP Chem and IB Physics but I do want to sleep, lol.
