I’m retaking Algebra 2 Semester 2 right now because I got a D,but if I got a D in Algebra I Semester 2 as well, do I have to retake Algebra 1 too. if I don’t will that jeopardize my chances to get into a UC?
UC’s let you validate D grades by passing a higher level of Math, so passing Algebra 2 with a C or better will validate the Algebra I grade. A passing grade of C or higher in your 2nd semester of Algebra 1, will validate the 1st semester.
However, depending upon when you took the Algebra 1 class, the D will remain on your transcript and could be included in your UC GPA calculation. Also since you got a D in Algebra 2 and now retaking the class, it could prove to be problematic. You do have to report all grades even though you have repeated the class, but the repeat grade will be used in the GPA calculation. With the competitiveness of the UC’s, having a D on your record could negatively impact your chances.
How about CSU’ universities @Gumbymom ?
@Gumbymom I took the Algebra 1 class freshmen year of high school.
CSU/UC’s only use 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation, so if you took Algebra 1 Freshman year, then the D will not be included in the GPA calculation, but it also means the you did not pass Algebra 1 if you received a D 2nd semester. If you pass Algebra 2 2nd semester, then you validate the Algebra 1 course.
To be considered for admission, you must complete 15 year long high school courses with a grade of C or better — at least 11 of them prior to your senior year, so if you have not completed the minimum 11 courses due to the D in Algebra 1, your application may not be reviewed.
The CSU’s offer the same grade validation for Math classes, but you do not have report the original grade if you repeated the course, while the UC’s want both grades reported. Again, if you do not repeat Algebra 1, your D will still need to be reported on your application for both CSU’s and UC’s but not included in the GPA calculation.
