I'm an entering freshman next year, and I've narrowed down my housing options to Unit 3 (a double) or Foothill (triple or quad rooms in a suite). I'm in engineering so I suppose Foothill would be most convenient for at least a portion of my classes, but from what I've heard from friends who've either graduated already or are currently at Cal, the Units are more convenient for freshmen in general due to the variety in classes. I'm not too concerned about whether or not a dorm is social since I generally keep to myself, so it doesn't really matter.
1. I heard somewhere that there's no WiFi in Foothill rooms... is this true, and if it is, how can this be remedied?
2. How is dining at Foothill and Unit 3?
3. How are student services at either location?

Thanks!

Not 100% sure, but either way, you should be using your ethernet cable for internet. Wifi is unreliable/slow!

I’d say Foothill wins Cafe 3 just by a little bit. I’ve been enjoying Cafe 3 much more this year. It’s usually Foothill > Clark Kerr > Cafe 3 > Crossroads. I have never eaten at Clark Kerr to make a good judgment for that DC. I’d say both are great compared to Crossroads!

Should be the same. Both locations have a ASC (Academic Student Center).

With everything being said, I’d still recommend the units just because everything is much more convenient that way.

As an engineering major just go for foothill. It will save you the effort and even if there are more diversity in the units, there are barely any engineers there taking the same classes as you are so if you want to study it’s a little more difficult.

There are usually no wifi in the rooms anyways; there’s only wifi in common spaces. This is somewhat unreliable in the units or in foothill… If you bring your own router to connect your ethernet cord too then bam, you have your own wifi network.

Foothill tends to have less options but their late night is a lot better than crossroads. You can get steak or shrimp.

Student services are the same. It doesn’t really matter.

Thanks!

I stayed over last weekend for OSP and I stayed in Unit 2… which was okay. Food at Crossroads was pretty decent too, but not something I’d want to eat every single day.

Are there any other glaring disadvantages to Foothill besides being on the other side of most social events/restaurants/etc? I heard it’s more comfortable and spacious than the Units (which, frankly, doesn’t seem very difficult to accomplish LOL) but also that it’s generally difficult for freshman to get a room/suite there.

And if by chance I don’t get Foothill, which Unit would you suggest? Most whom I’ve asked say Units 3 or 1; 3 because of the food/Cafe 3, and 1 because of newer rooms over 2.

Unit 3 is further from the math, computer science, physics, and chemistry areas than Foothill or Unit 1. But it is closer to the humanities, biology, and psychology areas, and the Recreational Sports Facility (gym). Unit 2 is two blocks further away than Unit 1.

Hey there! First of all, congratulations and welcome :)

I currently live in Unit 2 this year and I personally think Unit 1 and 2 are really good. I love my dorm. Unit 2 also has good wifi connection, and I would think 1 does too because these two are the most recently renovated ones (unless you wanna aim for Martinez Commons). The only big advantage 1 has over 2 is that it’s closer.

Unit 3 and Foothill don’t have wifi, or at least, very unreliable wifi. Ethernet is the fastest, even in Unit 1 and 2, but if you really want wireless, you can bring a router.

Foothill’s DC is a lot…prettier than Cafe 3. And I have heard wondrous things about their late night. But options wise, they actually reminded me a lot of Crossroads (maybe better quality though). Cafe 3 seems to have more variety at times. Each place also kinda has staples, like Cafe 3 will almost always have these special burgers of theirs and Crossroads will always have pizza. Living in the Units will bring you closer to all the dining commons except for Foothill’s.

I think the Student services should be about the same? I heard from a friend that Foothill’s doesn’t open until 9AM or something so if you’re trying to print something for an 8AM class, you need to find another printer. I don’t know when U3’s opens.

Are you Regents? If you aren’t, there’s no guarantee you’ll get your first choice, and I feel like U3 is more popular since it has a market, and is so close to campus (plus there isn’t that ungodly hill @.@). All my friends I know who put Foothill/Bowles/Stern as their last choice got placed there; might be because Units are more popular so if you express interest in the other ones, you’ll be placed there to save trouble trying to find more spots in the Units.
