A Few Questions (Any UCLA students/alums willing to help me out?)

I was really excited to be admitted to UCLA! I just have a few questions:

Tuition - My dad has lived in California for over a year, but I am currently living in New Jersey. How many years will it be until I can get in state tuition?

Course Registration - Out of all the classes that you registered for, what is the typical number of classes you can get into if you're a freshman?

If I have sophomore standing, will that increase my chances of getting into the classes I want?

Does having an earlier New Student Orientation date increase my chances of getting into classes?

If I've taken ten AP tests and got 5's on all of them, do all of them count for units if they are not all related to my major?

Can I take college or community college courses to get more units?

Honors Program - The website says that if a student has a minimum 4.1 weighted GPA and a minimum SAT score of 2080, they qualify for the College Honors Program. However, the actual application says you MUST send in proof saying that you graduated within the top 3% of your school. Which one is it?

Scratch the first question. I found the site and application about transferring from nonresident to resident status.

courses and orientation: You sign up for your fall quarter classes at summer orientation. It doesn’t really matter which session you go to since they continually open up more spots for each session, and a lot of spots (for my classes) at the end of summer, when it’s open for everyone. They recommend taking 3 classes, which is what pretty much everyone does, except for a few special cases, or if you really want to take that 4th class…

Sophomore standing: it won’t matter for the fall quarter class registration, but afterwards, it may help a bit. they designate time slots for each class, seniors first, then juniors, etc…so you’ll get an earlier time than people with freshman standing. however, a lot of freshmen enter as sophomores already…but you should still be able to get the classes that you want, as long as you use your first pass for your fastest-filling classes. but you’ll learn all this later…

AP tests: there’s a chart signifying what your ap tests count for, but usually, as long as you got at least a 3 on a test, then you’ll get credit. Exceptions: for english, if you took lit and lang, they’ll only count one, the one with the higher score. so, depending on what your major/college is: [AP Credit - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/apcredit.htm)

ummmm so i’m assuming you’re talking about taking comm. college courses, but yes, you can take more classes to get more units, or knock out a few GE’s, but be careful if they’re just extra units that you don’t need, if it’s a class you don’t care about, don’t waste the money/time just to get units. not worth it. UCLA has a unit cap, so if you plan on taking a lot of classes at ucla…(ap credits won’t count against you for the max, but they can help you meet the min. :D)

Honors program, it’s an either/or. If you don’t meet the first part, then you have to do the second. The first qualification is an automatic checking process. hope this helped :)

In reference to your question about Community College courses - note that you can take courses at a CC, but I think you can only do so up until you reach 105 units. Also, you cannot take CC courses at the same time you are enrolled at UCLA during a regular quarter (F,W,Sp). You can, however, attend summer school at UCLA and simultaneously enroll in a CC course (i.e. taking a Math course at UCLA summer school and a GE at Santa Monica College).
