Hey guys, I just finished enrolling in classes and I have a few questions:

For my marine bio class, I wasn't able to select a discussion (nothing shows up for a discussion in my schedule). There were multiple ones listed, do I just attend the one I can go to? Or, would this be a better question for the professor/department?

For textbooks, if it says that it's a UCSD special edition, does that really mean anything. It mentioned an aris card, is it really necessary?

Usually the professor requires the aris card to do online work. You can buy it from the company that published the book. As for custom edition textbook, it’s a slight revision or a different order of content. It’s not worth spending 100 dollars more for the ease of finding something. you can buy an used one and not suffer in class.

For discussion sections, if you can’t sign up when you enroll for the class, that means either discussions aren’t mandatory (and you can go to any sections) or you just sign up later. Don’t worry too much about it. If you have to sign up for section once classes start, the professor will explain it.

Oh, and usually custom edition are just shorter (and more expensive) versions of the original textbook. Just make sure to buy an aris card or any other access code you might need.

Sometimes the free card that comes with the book makes it worth buying. I bought a textbook+card bundle that was sold at school for $110. I already had the book (which was worth $80) but I decided to purchase the card because if i didnt, it wouldve costed me $90. So i basically paid an extra $20 to buy the textbook and plan to sell it later. (it’s still unused sitting in my room)
