Aug 29: Freshmen enrollment open
Sep 4: WebReg open to All Students

but my enrollment appointment time is on Aug 30, so how can I enroll when WebReg is not available until Sep4th?
So we don't enroll right away at the end of August but wait until September 4th?

And another question, when it says textbooks are optional, it’s really optional right?
because I am looking at the list of textbooks required for BILD3 and there are 4 textbooks which are all marked “O.” (no required textbooks)
Do people generally buy optional textbooks?

You enroll on Aug 30, your enrollment appointment time. What they mean by “open to all students” is during that time period (Aug 29 - Sept 4) only freshmen can enroll in classes. Upperclassmen can’t access Webreg at that time. After Sept 4, anyone can make changes to their schedule.

I’ve never bought an optional textbook, and I’ve never found myself needing it.

thanks for answering my questions
I also wonder about the “UCSD custom textbooks with ARIS Card.” So basically we only have to buy those from UCSD bookstore?

UCSD custom textbooks are usually identical to the commercially available version, but cut up and rehashed to fit UCSD’s needs. For example if our physics curriculum doesn’t cover chapters 22-24 of a book, then the UCSD Custom copy won’t contain chapters 22-24 because at UCSD we don’t need those chapters. The content should be identical so custom editions are really no different than regular editions. you will often find it cheaper to just buy the “uncut” regular version of the book instead of buying the custom edition, which might be more expensive in the long run (you may have to buy several volumes as is the case with CHEM 6 and PHYS series) and harder to source because only UCSD students/bookstore would have it. regular versions usually have everything you need bundled up into one (heavy) textbook.

as for the ARIS card, you will need that to access online homework so I would recommend buying the Custom + ARIS edition. You only need to buy an ARIS code once, so after getting ARIS for your first CHEM 6 class, you can buy the rest of the books with or without ARIS since ARIS stays good for like a year plus. Some teachers don’t even require ARIS. However, I recommend buying with ARIS now because assuming you start with CHEM 6A, there’s a high chance you’ll end up needing ARIS in 6B or/and 6C if not in 6A, so you might as well get it now as you’ll probably need it later.

Optional books/tools are suggested to help enhance your learning, they have no bearing on your grade and will not be used in class (teacher might make a passing reference to it at most). So yes, “optional,” is being used in its truest sense here.

In general, do you guys know how much a UCSD custom textbook + ARIS cost?
I heard they have the ARIS care for sale too. (not sure how much it costs)
so I assume that buying a UCSD custom textbook+ARIS would be cheaper than buying an outside, normal textbook + ARIS from UCSD bookstore.
