Okay, so I was completing my UC application when I saw a warning that told me I did not meet one year long course subject in lab sciences. I have done Coordinated Science 1 freshman year, Coordinated Science 2 (Biology) sophomore year, and Honors Chemistry junior year. I had 2 A's, 3 B's and 1 C. Why do I have an error saying I lack one year in the requirements of lab sciences? I completed one year of Biology and one year of Chemistry like it asked with the grades needed. Please someone help!?

It could be that your Coordinated Science is not valid as an A-G course. Whats your school’s name and the city its located in?

I don’t know, but you can get an exemption from your A-G requirements if your UC score is high enough.

I live in Irvine California and go to University High School. It clearly says on the course catalog that Coordinate Science 2 is part of the laboratory sciences, even if it’s not honors… My sister put the exact same thing and turned in her application last year, so I don’t see what’s wrong. T_T

My counselor didn’t say anything about my course selections when we had our meetings, which I thought meant a clear indication that I was alright, as I already told her I had my eyes on the UC schools.

It may be because you are listing it as “Coordinated Science” which the computer is not recognizing as a lab science course rather than as “Biology” and “Honors Chemistry”

I believe I have the answer. According to the UC’s valid A-G course for your school it states that Coordinated Science 2 is an Integrated Science course. UC’s state you need 2 of the 3 lab courses in either Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. Only your Honors Chem satisfy the requirement.

I found this information using Doorway and provided a link of it for your designated high school below.

I hope this answered your question!

Well, the class is labeled as Coordinated Science 2 A/B (CP) on the UC application, but the teachers at our school call it CP Biology. It’s under Laboratory Science in the UC application as well… I’m so confused.

Thank you for the answer… Does this mean I’m screwed for the application this year… Oh my God…

Yes, Coordinated Science 2 is a laboratory science, but you must have 2 years of laboratory science that is biology, chemistry, or physics. Your schools coordinated science according to UC’s does not fit in those categories. UCs say they recommend 3 years of laboratory science in which if you took either of the 2 required (bio, chem, phys) + coordinated science it would be 3 years. Do you get what I’m saying?

What science are you taking this year? If your taking Physics A/B or AP Bio at your school than you fulfilled the lab requirement. If not, then you can take a subject test to fulfill the requirement but I’m not sure if its too late to do so.

Oh I see… Thanks. But my sister a year ago did the same thing and had no problems with her application… She went to the same school and only had Coordinate Science 1, 2 and Honors Chemistry… Did the requirements change or something? T_T I took Honors Chem last year so I’ll go to the December SAT 2 test if they have extra spots for the standby testing… God. I forgot everything … TT

And I’m not taking any science classes this year, which made me freak out… So I am really screwed.

^^Did your sister take any subject tests in science? A 530/540 in one subject clears that subject for admissions.

Doesn’t matter what your teacher calls the class. Only UC makes the determination on what a course will fulfill.

In general, the first year of a Coordinated/Integrated Science program does not count for UC. (yes it sucks, and high school science department heads should be retired, but that is a different thread.)

[University of California - Subject requirement](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/freshman/minimum-requirements/subject-requirement/index.html)

That’s the thing. My sister didn’t take a science subject test either. Only math 2, Korean, and Spanish. The only difference in science for me and my sister is that she dropped out of Coordinate Science 1 honors in her Freshman year. We are only two years apart… She took the EXACT same science courses as me, no extra in school, summer, community college, etc… What is going on…

If I look at this from my school website, I see that UC only requires one year of advanced science(Chemistry, Physics, Biology) and one year of Coordinate Science 2… Did my school lie to me? Please anyone explain this to me? http://iusd.org/UHS/Academics/documents/UniversityHighSchoolGraduationRequirements.pdf

dunno.

The three-year Integrated Science rule has been around for at least 6 years that I know of. But UC did make several changes to ELC starting this year. Perhaps its just a computer coding issue.

Suggest you trying calling the 800 number tomorrow.

Got it. Thank you very much for all the information you’ve given me. Really appreciate it bluebayou and everyone else!

Don’t worry! You can still be eligible for UC admission by other means, if you don’t meet the a-g requirements. Check out UC’s website for more info.
