So I've heard that it's not absolutely taboo to send in your deposit and then go somewhere else. It doesn't seal your fate, but it does involve losing some money.

Michigan just sent me a letter saying something about how even though the reply deadline is May 1, spots are on a first come, first serve basis. What does that mean? Does that mean that I may not have a spot come May 1st? Should I send in my deposit now, even if I haven't made my decision?

Some people double-deposit, no doubt about that.

I don't know about the "1st come..." thing. If you get your deposit in before May 1, you're in. They can't rescind your admission. Are you sure that wasn't in reference to something else?

"Our deadline for ensuring your spot in our freshman class of 2006 is May 1,
but remember that spots are allocated on a first-come, first-served
basis-so send in your $200 Enrollment Deposit as soon as possible."

This is what the email they sent me said.
I'm really confused...it seems to contradict itself.

give them an email as to what steps they would take if you pay your enrollment deposit right on May 1 and they have no slots for you.....this is quite ridiculous!!

I think it has to do with housing and such...the earlier you send in your deposit the more likely you are to get your choice of housing...?

Well, that's odd wording on their part, because I assure you, May 1 is the deadline. If you deposit on or before May 1, you have a spot in the class. End of story.

It just means that the earlier you commit to Michigan, the better your chances at getting the dorm of your choice and the better your chances of getting the classes you want your first semester.

yeah if they mean dorms then the statement makes perfect sense...gosh it scared me at the first instance!!

whew! thanks guys...I think i'm going to wait a little while longer to send in my deposit.
