Hi,
I received a typed letter from the mathematics department of Deerfield Academy.
The letter said that the Admissions Committee heard that I have interest in mathematics. And then it went on to talk about the Deerfield Academy math curriculum. It was signed by hand with a blue pen.
Is this any kind of sign? A bad or good sign of admission or rejection?
Or is it given to everyone. And another thing: In my essays, I didn't say that I had interest in math.

You must have expressed that interest in your interview.
It certainly isn't a bad sign. It sounds like a uniform letter, but I would be happy about it!

It's certainly not a bad sign, but let's hear who else has received it.

A friend of mine did. He told me in the car this morning he got one for his music interests(He plays the viola in a concert band). I thought it was because he played the viola on a "competitive" level... Are you a "competitive" mathematician?

I guess so. Also, was your friend a strong applicant? Because it might be sent to potential applicants who may be admitted and encouraging the applicant to come to Deerfield if accepted.

I'm not sure if it is given to everyone, but I've heard of a lot of people who have received them. I got math, history, music (along with request for CD), and visual/performing arts. I think it has to do with the interests that you mentioned in your interview.

I think leesh1995 is saying this happened quite recently. thingslost seems to be talking about the letters sent out after the interview and before or right after the application deadline. right, thingslost?

My friend is a decent person. He has the viola... and the fact that he speaks spanish fluently? I know he thinks that my app is better than his, because we compared and contrasted.

I still think that his is better than mine considering the fact that he was born in Venezuela and that he speaks fluent spanish.

I didn't apply to Deerfield, so I can't say that I got one.
He is a junior by the way(A year older than me).

No, my letters were sent out like a month and a half after the interview, but I interviewed in early November. I'm not sure if they're the same letter, but her description sounds EXACTLY like the math letter I received. Perhaps leesh1995 interviewed later in the year? TSAO agreed not to send anything to students other than a short letter/email informing the applicant that their stuff has been received after the apps deadline, so I'm assuming that the letter leesh received was sent out before February 2.

Yes, I received them today (02/20/09). I had my interview on January 17th at Deerfield.
I don't remember talking about math during the interview though.

That sounds about right. Today's the 20th? I've been writing 19th on all of my papers! GAHH!!! Anyways, I don't even remember most of my interview! Just that I was really nervous and my shoes were uncomfortable.

leesh1995, but your application wasn't late was it? did you submit your application by Jan 15?

same thing happened to me. i recieved my math one on 20th, yet my interview was in jan.
i think it's just basic drill, that they do it for all applicants. but if they're sending them this late maybe they've kept us in mind? lol, not sure.

They did that for me in sports I think. Sports or music, whatever.

If you received that letter for anything else than a post-interview commentary, Deerfield wouldn't be adhering to the rules in that they wouldn't talk to you during the month of decision making :P

thegreatescape, what's your ssat percentages, and what grade are you applying to? International student?

westcoast_, where does it say that schools "wouldn't talk to you during the month of decision making"?

replied in pm, watertester.

out of curiousity, has anyone applying to deerfield recieved a personal letter or such?

Yeah, I got a handwritten postcard from the dean of admissions shortly after my interview. It was short, but it was still a nice thing to get. Nothing snide or sleazy or anything like that, just kind of a thanks for visiting and good luck kind of thing.

did you interview with the dean of admissions? just wondering. and that must be a good sign, gratz. :)

Leesh: I got the same letter about the science department of a different school

Yeah, she was my interviewer. I don't know if it's a good sign, or a sign at all, in fact - Deerfield capitalizes on its sense of community and close-knitted student body, so it seems to follow that they would send nice little postcards to their applicants. I mean, it was just a small postcard - it would have taken very little time to write and I bet that it's their policy to send them to their interviewees as long as they interview before the Ten Schools communication blackout.
