A little waitlist news

^^ Or not!

The numbers are so dynamic on a day to day basis right now as waitlist musical chairs unfolds, that it's just impossible for adcoms to make blanket statements. For example, Stanford has apparently closed their class. But, if Harvard takes ten from California, Stanford could end up needing to top up with five more, which could cost Swarthmore and Pomona a couple each so it's back to the waitlist.

I still think that answering "we don't know" would be better than no answer at all. Many of us are aware of the ripple effect, so it's understandable that they can't predict if any will be taken off after first cycle.

And nobody still cleared up why they can tell news reporters about wait list, but nothing directly to students.

Okay, so I got an e-mail from the admissions office tonight that is saying something about waitlist.

Anyone knows if this is another cruel joke or...?

(weird how I always get e-mails from Swat right after I complain here about not getting any :/ I start to feel they know my identity )

The only honest answer to waitlist questions from any college except maybe HYP at this point is "we don't know" - so what's the point asking?

^^ At this point, I know it's "we don't know" so I didn't even ask about my chances or number of people getting off wait list. My question to add office was about something else.

And an e-mail I got from add office was something official. I suppose one of those e-mails that everyone on wait list gets. It just said that they don't have any free space right now, but they might in near future and it asked us to say if we want to be taken off it. They just sent (the first!) official update on waitlist :)

I don't know what I should answer to that. Thanks for still letting me "be in the game" or just not reply at all?

If you want to stay on the waitlist, you should probably say so...

im starting to feel like its over which is then followed by disapointment i mean all the waiting the hoping if they want to offer admission they would have done it by now

^^ True, I'll be believing that, too. At least so that I wouldn't be crushed.

Btw, did you get that e-mail as well? And did you get any of your e-mails replied?

boho_girl, if you were offered a place in the incoming class at Swarthmore, would you immediately accept it? If your answer is "yes," you should send them an email reply that you would like to remain on the waiting list!

I would in a heartbeat

... if I didn't have to wait to see the finaid offer. :(
I love Swarthmore, but it will depend on money they give me if I could accept or not.
But they know my financial situation, so I'll send them a "please, please, please, let me into your school if you get some free room!" e-mail. :)

Note to self: Don't get your hopes up, don't get your hopes up...

Here's another article that mentions "Swarthmore" along with "wait list"

Waiting out the college wait lists | Philadelphia Inquirer | 05/19/2008

Just out of curiosity, did anyone else get an e-mail about wait list update?

Boho_girl,
I didn't get an email but I did receive a letter in the mail. It wasn't anything new, really. It just asked for people who have already decided on a school to withdraw themselves from the WL if they haven't done so already.

i also got another letter basically saying "dont forget ur on the waitlist!"

i think they've pretty much filled their waitlist class. at this point, they're just waiting to see if the lose anyone to harvard or whatever. unless something happens, i dont see anyone else getting off the list.

i called and they said theyll be giving us an update in two weeks

Last week I was on the phone with the admissions office about something totally unrelated to wait-lists (my D was accepted regular decision). I was "chatting" with the person who was helping me and we started talking about the craziness of this year's admission process. We then began talking about wait-lists.

This person said that Swarthmore was still working through its wait-list and that this year was so crazy that the whole wait list ordeal could drag until school starts but that Swarthmore was planning on having all of its decisions finalized by the end of June regardless of whether spots continued to open up. -- I thought that I should share this tidbit because those of you who are still waiting should not give up hope just yet. A lot could still happen in the next weeks.

Good luck to all of you!

Indeed, a lot could happen!

My son got a call this afternoon from our regional admissions person: he's in! Now what?

He's been so happily ensconced in his decision to go to Brown these past few weeks. He's been wearing the t-shirt, he's connected with future classmates with similar interests ("West Wing," backpacking), he's even connected with the conductor for the viola ensemble. But should he revisit his decision? Open up that whole can of worms again? It seems to me this is a mixed blessing.

Of course, it's his decision to make (though the financial aid piece may prove to be important). I think even he would say that it's been his lead all along through this process. But he does look to us for guidance and to bounce ideas off of.

So, in addition to financial aid information (do waitlist admits get the same consideration as if they were regular admits? is S generous? will they try to match other schools' offers? etc.), I guess we'd like to hear from members of the Swarthmore community what they think differentiates them and their school from Brown? What sort of person/student is happiest at Swarthmore vs. Brown?

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. My son would be posting here himself, I imagine, except that he's way too busy with end-of-year activities, finals, and graduation next weekend. Plus, I feel a little responsible. One of the reasons he looked into Swarthmore in the first place was my saying to him "everyone I've ever met who went to Swarthmore really knows how to think."

Yes. Yes. Plus, Swarthmore is now no-loan for all students.

wolrab, in my experience, the Brown/Swarthmore crossover is a really close one. Both back in "my day" (early 80s) and among my D's classmates, I've been struck by how similar the kinds of students who are drawn to the two schools are.

Besides size (and I guess location), the easiest distinction to draw is open curriculum vs. distribution requirements. And Swat has the Honors program.

Congratulations and good luck to your son. He can't go wrong either way. It's a wonderful problem to have.

Brown is one of Swarthmore's top 5 cross-admit schools. The other four are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford (replacing Amherst last year).

Swarthmore having three times Brown's per student endowment would answer the question for me, but...honestly...your son has to decide for himself.
