A Low Freshman GPA - My downfall?

Hey everyone, I'm a Junior at a fairly competitive public high school in Massachusetts... I have begun to really invest my time into figuring out where I would want to apply for colleges. The only problem, is schools that I believe are at my caliber in fact have much higher average GPA's then I have. My Freshman year FIRST semester average GPA was a 3.0 UW (3.5 W) and the rest of my high school career I have a 3.8 UW and a 4.34 W GPA to give me an overall 3.66 UW and a 4.21 weighted...

One school in particular that I'm interested in is USC. My GPA seems to be under their reported, but when I take away that ONE semester, it's actually above... I realize that the reported scale is an average, but being above that average and being below it is a big difference... Or is it?

I guess my question is, how much will this end up affecting me? And, will the college really take into consideration that I've improved? I've worked far too hard to have one semester from freshman year bring down my chances of getting into a college I'd like to go to.

It was freshman year, so they’ll take the improvement more seriously than–oh no!–one semester of grades! Haha you can relax  Just 1/8 of your high school career, and at the beginning no less. I’d worry about the rest of your application personally.

I know, I figured they would see an improvement, just it does bring my overall GPA down a pretty good amount…

colleges take into consideration that most students don’t know what to expect their freshmen year at HS

it could turn out helping you - they may think “He didn’t do too well his freshmen year, but he improved dramatically” just work extra hard your senior year and I don’t think you should be worried

chance back?

JAC - I know, just obviously the most important thing to nearly all colleges are stats, and I’m just afraid that since that semester brings down my GPA by a fairly good amount that I won’t be able to get in because of it. I can see where you are going with the improvement though, but that is taken into consideration after the stats, isn’t it?

What kind of grades were you getting? Just B’s or a lot of C’s also?

Eak, I got a B-, a B+, and a B.

I would agree with the above posters and say improvement is probably a bigger factor than one semester of B’s. I got a couple of a couple of B’s freshman and sophomore year (1 B, 2B’s and 1 B again), but I’ve gotten all A’s for the past two semesters so I hope colleges will factor in my improvement.

Chance me?

Shouldn’t be a big worry for you Sean  Just keep up the good work.
