A minus in planned major

<p>I was planning to major in chemistry (definitely I am a math science person) but got an A minus in my honors chemistry course. Will this less than stellar grade be overlooked if I get a 5 on AP test and 800 on SAT II, and do reasonably well on the USNCO next year?</p>

<p>I'm talking about Stanford / other top colleges that weight HS minus and plus grades differently. Also, I've heard that some colleges don't explicitly factor minus/plus into HS GPA but do take it into account during applications.</p>

<p>And please, don't make fun of me for complaining about an A minus. Normally I'd be pleased with one but since this is my planned area of study and I am passionate about it... I'm not sure why I got an A minus and I hope this doesn't hurt in college apps. Obviously, if i was going into liberal arts it'd be great, but I'm not...</p>

<p>You realize the (-) doesn’t matter don’t you??? It still counts as a 4.0 (or 5.0 weighted) in your GPA.</p>

^Who gives a ****, it’s one college and the acceptance rate is 6%, even if you got 127.5 in AP Chem, and won a national chemistry award, they still may not accept you. Just stop…like honestly.</p>

<p>Okay, honestly, there’s not much to say about it. It’s a chip off a huge block of marble, in terms of what matters for your application. Of course it’d be better if you had perfect everything, but this is not of huge significance, and none of us can say how it will affect your admissions at schools like Stanford where the primary reason for rejection is not insufficient academic record but merely that not ever amazing applicant can be accepted, meaning that one must be otherwise distinguished. The most helpful remark any of us can probably make is that, if you are rejected, this will almost certainly not be why.</p>

<p>Your question is like asking if we think the freckle on your forehead will prevent Megan Fox from going out with you. In light of so many other factors working against you, your freckle doesn’t matter.</p>

Anyway, my major strength is in academics so A minuses are just not good enough for me. I have decent EC’s but I’m not a D1 Athlete or concert pianist, and I haven’t started a charity or anything…</p>

<p>Ok, in light of others being rude, if you can show that you’re still a strong applicant, you can get into Stanford. An A- is not the end of the world. Don’t treat it like it is. </p>

<p>You’re not getting into Stanford on even stellar academics alone, I hope you know that. If you’re at the point where an A- affects your transcript in a significant manner, you have a lot more to worry about.</p>

<p>Nevertheless, I sincerely doubt you are at this point, and therefore your A- doesn’t matter. Stop over-blowing things and being so dramatic.</p>

<p>Dude… Bobtheboy. You linked to a Graduate CS school site. That admission guideline is for applying to graduate school. Undergrad doesn’t give a flying rat’s ass about +/- in hs unless your high school differentiates them.</p>

<p>Also these threads are useless. There isn’t a point asking if something that has already happened will hurt your chances if there’s nothing you can do about it. Focus on what you can do in the future.</p>

<p>Get off CC and do something to strengthen your application. Don’t post this crap in HSL. This belongs in College Admissions.</p>
