and i guess Harvard, not really a desire for me, but what the heck why not (:

for the record, i consider no school a safety because each school to me has significant value in its own way.

You have a better shot than most because of your URM status , though lack of AP classes (not sure how it works at your school), doesn’t really represent rigorous schedule. I think you’d at least get into half those schools if the ranges of your practice tests coincide with your SATs. ECs are good, though the Charity ones stands out the most.

thanks alot! Well our school doesnt offer AP courses, kinda because we have a new school, but which out of these schools would be considered a reach?

hey fellow Canadian, you have great scores & grades! Those are really fantastic, and your ranking is awesome. Extracurriculars are good, but they aren’t “unified”. Have you taken any other non-math/non-science courses? A lot of schools now are going for a liberal arts education, so you should try taking some writing, history, or arts courses.

Well I did take art in my freshman year, and i was actually so great ( not to boast or anything ) that my art teacher recommended me to skip a grade to a junior class in my sophomore year. Well mainly because I got a 100 on my final So yea i did take art courses. Now seeing that these are so many science courses and math courses to take that fill up my schedule, i may not have a place for them [ other types of courses ]. My next year’s schedule is gonna look like this: Adv. Functions, Calculus, Chem, Bio, Physics, Religion, English ( which i might plan on taking in the summer, but idk if i should because it might hurt my chances? ) and then i’ll probably throw in grade 12 art if you believe that it makes a difference. I somewhat like art, but my teacher has revived my disinterest in it. So im still thinking. any thought on that?

I see. Well, I think you should still find at least one non-math/science course (aside from Religion). You don’t want to absolutely kill yourself with a huge workload, though I had the same thing in Gr.11. For the first semester, I had Ad. Func, Calc, Chemistry, and English! It was crazy but I survived. Having Ad. Func and Calc in the same semester really sucks, though. It’s true that some AF concepts carry onto Calc and it’s difficult if your Calc teacher goes faster than your AF teacher.

Now I’m in Gr.12 and don’t have math anymore-wheeeee!

I don’t think it would hurt your chances. I took physics in summer school b/c I had no room for it. It doesn’t show up on your transcript differently, I’ve looked.

Do Gr.12 art! Apparently, it’s a lot more art history, but I really love that stuff, too. It’s so strange how I love science and art… and every other course :] but all the schools now offer a liberal arts education, so it’s all good! Take art in Gr.12. You get a nice credit, it’s a different course (a nice break from hours of science and math) which allows you to be CREATIVE. Since you’re good at it, it’ll even boost up your average like it’s going to do to mine next semester ;)hehe I got 100% in art last year-not trying to brag, just saying how it’ll be super beneficial if you took it in GR.12

Nicee! Well, originally, were you saying to take art to take stress off the other courses? Or because it shows depth? In my art class, my teacher makes it seem kinda boring, and for our final last year, she wanted 10 high quality pieces… I was at such a disadvantage because I threw everything our from garde 9, and every other junior in the class had so much work from years before, i finished with a 84? i dropped that class so fast in grade 11…, but idk i’ll think about it

And i best be seeing you in Cornell, which is my top priority next to UPenn and WashU ;)

Yes. Art is a huge stress-reliever for me (although sometimes it creates more stress since studio work is painstakingly slow sometimes), but art also shows that you’re not a robot who only likes science & math and nothing else. You can also take music if it’s what you like/are good at. There’s also drama, which I would consider as my last resort haha since I am not great at acting.

I know! I really want to make it into Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, and Harvard. Those are the only schools I’m applying to this year. It’s only 4-that’s not too much to ask, right? lol You’ve still got time since you’re a junior. If I remember, I will tell you how decisions go. I’m applying to CAS at Cornell (College of Arts & Sciences). Amazing campus, cool people, awesome education. All of these apply to Brown as well
