A pretty worried prospective student.

Okay, well originally I was planning on doing ED to Tufts. Unfortunately, I heard some negative things about that college, and now am unsure as to what to do. I have heard that Cornell, on the other hand, was loved by anyone who went there. Now I am looking at Cornell for ED, but to tell you the truth, I don't think my chances are that great, so I need a second opinion. I really want to become a doctor, so I guess I should be applying early to the Agriculture and Life Sciences place right? Anyway, here are my stats:

I have a 3.62 GPA unweighted, 3.82 weighted.

I have taken AP Physics B, AP Stat, AP Language, AP Spanish, AP US, and AP Biology. I am currently taking AP Psych, AP Lit, AP Macro, AP Physics C, AP Calc BC, and AP Chemistry. I got a 2170 on my SAT's and plan to retake in November.

I got an 800 on Bio SAT II, 720 on Math IC, and 720 on Chemistry. I am planning on taking SAT II Physics and Math IIC in October. As for EC's, I have been starting on varsity lacrosse since 10th grade, varsity basketball, cross country, and varsity football. I am in NHS, Science Olympiads, Math Olympiads, Diversity Club, WAC, and Chess Club. I have played the violin since 3rd grade. I have been accepted into the Columbia Science Honors Program.

In addition, I have volunteered at a local hospital for over 400 hours. I have also volunteered at a local library. Finally, this past summer I went down to New Orleans and helped out with Habitat for Humanity. If there is any other information that is necessary, please ask. Thanks. Oh yeah, I am also in training to become a certified EMT!

Oh, I almost forgot. I have been doing an internship at a hospital dealing with psychiatry. If all goes well, I will become a co-author of a medical journal. Not really sure how much weight that has, but I just thought I'd mention it. So...what are my chances, guys?

I think you have a decent shot. Your GPA is a little low but everything else looks good.

But not everyone at Cornell loves it. It's not for everyone.

Anyone else?

Are you in the top 10%?

I would say so.

Which school at Cornell are you applying to? Are you a NY resident?

You do not necessarily have to be in the Ag school to be pre-med, and you do not necessarily have to major in biology. http://www.career.cornell.edu/healthCareers/HumanMedicine/faq.html

Ya I would leave Tufts for regular if you end up going. I'd think you would get into Tufts either way and at least with regular you get to think about the financial aid package. But anyways, best of luck with Cornell and don't rely on people's opinions...research and visit it for yourself! Cornell is an amazing place so hopefully you will both love it and get in!

Thanks a lot. Yeah, I am a New York resident (LI). I was thinking about doing Tufts RD, but I didn't really think I had a shot.

Also, what other colleges (in Cornell) should I consider applying to? I mean, which ones are known to have a higher acceptance rate?

Somebody please?

Since you're a NY resident, the NY contract schools such as CALS, ILR and HumEcol may offer a slight advantage, to offset your GPA. While you have a serious decision ahead of you, ED @ Tufts or Cornell, you're right that CALS (Ag & Life Sci) is where you should be aiming if you appy to Cornell.

Just curious, but why CALS over ILR and Human ecology? I mean, I was planning on applying to CALS anyway, but I was just wondering if it would be easier through ILR or human ecology.

The contract schools do NOT offer any admissions advantage to NY residents. You still should apply to CALS, however, because the tuition is cheaper if you get in compared to, say, CAS.

You are talking about specialty colleges. You won't get in unless you have a passion for that specialty. Stick with CALS because the contract colleges probably have stiff competition between NY residents anyways. Stick with your passion and that will give you the best chance of getting in.

Okay, so I think that I'm actually going to do ED at Cornell SALS. But I need some honest opinions. What do my chances seriously look like?

Somebody please?

I'm not trying to be mean, but why don't you see whether you like it, instead of basing your opinions on what other people say?

I understand. I've actually been there before, and I remember it being a very beautiful campus. I'm just not sure whether I want a less rural, more suburban place like Tufts or a more rural, less suburban place like Cornell.

Definitely visit both schools first. There's a big difference between Tufts Arts & Sciences and SALS at Cornell. If you were to comapre them, compare Tufts Arts & Sciences to Cornell's A&S.
