A Question About Iub

IUB.... a univ located in the north of Bremen (the poorest German state)in a small town called Vegesack. It is an ex-army base converted into a campus. The town is full of old ppl who only speak German and to get to the main city u need to take a 25min train !

I've been to Germany and I really love Bremen. The architecture there is just one word - awesome. Pace of life is great too. Shops are closed at around 6 and it's a rich cultural city. It's normal to hear choirs singing on the streets or people perform. Weather is nice too and most importantly, the food is cheap. I mean I went to Berlin and Hamburg and no other places serve food as cheaply (and nice) as Bremen!!

I stayed in two hotels: Ibis and Hilton. Ibis was located in a ghetto I think becase I saw people fighting outside of my hotel room in the wee hours of morning. Try doing this in Singapore and you will know what I mean.

But other than that, I really love Bremen. =)

I do agree though that it's hard to survive in Bremen (and Germany) without any knowledge of German (which in my opinion can be picked up easily... Basic German). I remember greeting this old granny in some German mart "Guten Tag/Morgan" and she was soo pleasantly surprised. And although she can't speak English, that smile... yeah was sooo sweet. :D

Same city but two views. One makes me hate it and the one above makes it an inviting place. :)

hahaha very true well as of how i see germany and most of european cities, they are highly inviting cultural storehouses .. with a rich traiditonal touch to the feel of life. a pleasant experiance and an amazing experiance..

as of german well the basic german is yes very very easy to pick up..:)

SM

Bremen is a good tourist place....not a place to have an International University for yung students.......

mjehan: you seem to be very bitter about IUB. Mind sharing with us why?

I mean even if I go to Kenyon, I dont expect my stay there to be smooth and full of roses. I am pretty sure I will get homesick or get into trouble some times. :p I can imagine myself having some pretty tough times there. :(

I beg to differ actually. Bremen is an exciting place where exciting activities are held actually. Some examples would be the 2004 Choir Olympics and the annual MUN held in IUB. It attracts sooo many young students. And having been there, I can only rave about Bremen... the city and everything! :D I mean where on Earth can you get movenpick ice-cream for .65 euros? Or erm chocolates (loads of good quality chocs) at less that a dollar euro? :)

Sausages (with bread) is standard at 2 euros each. And also, you have the chance to travel around Europe! Or watch the World Cup finals! The only thing I find problemetic is that the standard of chinese cuisine in Germany is really low... I went to one and find myself eating CANNED food which cost 8 euros a plate. :(

Gosh... how I wish I can teleport BACK to Bremen. I have never experienced such an atmosphere in my whole life in Singapore.

lol no, I agree with mjehan here.. there is not much to the city. I would prefere IUB located in Berlin or Amsterdam ;) Only good thing about Bremen is that the neighbourhoods and most of the city is amazingly picturesque. And by the way weather sucks, there is not a single day it has not rained at all, and winters are horrible (well Berlin is even colder), and spring didn't arrive until one week ago.

Cheap food is true - 4 topping pizza for 5 euro, door delivered. Döner kebab for 3 euro... heat-n-eat stuff for <1 euro! Soda for 39 cent, etc etc

OK now here I have views that differ from Mjehan (its weird calling u that:P ) and merc's!

I think the weather is fine, it does rain a lot but that's better than being stuck under half a foot of snow all thru winter ! It snowed only a handful of times all throughout winter, and even though it gets cold, well, what do you expect? Its northern Europe! You cant expect a Florida kind of weather! Berlin is much much colder. Also, Spring and Autumn are reaally beautiful here. I wouldn't want IUB to be in Berlin or Amsterdam :P Bremen may be a poor state but I should point out to u merc, Berlin is a bankrupt city, Bremen is better off than that! :P

About food prices in Bremen, I don't know because the food they serve here on campus never seemed so bad to me that I had to go out and eat or anything. I may not always love it but its not bad. I mean, there is a lot of variety and if you are ok with continental food, then you won't have any major problems with the food.

I think its fine that IUB is located in Bremen. I come from Delhi, so its not like I don't know how life in a big city is and I still like bremen. Just don't worry too much about it and come to IUB :P ;)

Yeah, I have to agree that it rains a LOT in Bremen. Can someone please tell me what's the name of erm the Fish Restaurant that is everywhere in Bremen? And is the name of the mart Karstard? :D

And moreover, you can get a cheap adidas bag at 15 euros!!

Come on...after tonight's dinner, I'm sure your views have changed :P

No...the mushrooms were great :D

Mushroom are meant to be smoked...not eaten !

DAMN ARAMARK !

To each his own...

West Europe is the place to get lots of rain

Rain....pain....and no shame !

oh.. i love the rain.. it rains in assam all thetime

so who all got in? radhika, r u going to IUB?

yea.. probably..

I have a question for all of you who are currently at IUB and anyone else who knows anything about job possibilities in Germany. Can you find a job say as a Computer Programmer in Germany just with a BS and no Master's. Do they give work permits to non-EU citizens?

Difficult with only a 3 year bachelor, because it's a new kind of degree in Germany and almost all students get into the job market after the 5 year Diplom thing.. so many companies don't understand what is this 3 year degree you have (this is what I heard). BUT then lots of companies hold presentations at IUB so it shouldn't be TOO much of a problem. You also need to know German to B1.2 level or something to get a job. They do offer work permits to non-EU citizens.

Also, this is what I have picked up until now. I don't claim I'm correct...
