A question about my schedule for freshman year

I am currently pre-MIMG and attended an earlier orientation session and I am enrolled in Math 3A, Chem 14a, a GE cluster, and 2 fiat lux seminars. When I was reading over the MIMG packet earlier tonight, I noticed the "recommended schedule". I got a 3 on the AP English exam, so I still need to fulfill the W1 requirement and to be eligible for the spring quarter GE cluster class I need to have fulfilled the W1 requirement in the fall or winter quarter. However, this poses a problem as I do not see a feasible way to take English 3 in the fall or winter quarter unless I drop the GE class. Next quarter they "recommend" that I take Chem 14B (4 units), 14BL (3 Units), Math 3B (4 units), and one other class. However, I would need to take a GE Cluster and English Composition 3, which puts me at 20 or 21 units; which I do not envision to be a good idea.

So as of right now I can think of three options:

1) Drop the GE Cluster and Take English 3 first quarter.

2) Drop the seminars and take English 3 first quarter so that I have 4 classes (even though this is strongly recommended against?)

3) Try and take those 5 during winter quarter (I think this is suicide).

What would you guys recommend I do in my situation? Since I've already signed up for classes, should I just wait until the quarter starts then go arrange a meeting with a counselor since most of the English 3 classes are either full or closed right now? Thanks.

Edit: Another reason I want to take the GE cluster is that I'm in the honors program and completion of a cluster gives 15 honors units, which would be really nice.

don’t take the cluster

^Agreed! Don’t take the cluster.

First quarter you don’t necessarily have to take 4 classes. I like taking individual GE’s better than the cluster. Eng Comp 3, Chem 14A and Math 3A sound like a better schedule for first quarter than GE cluster or 4 classes.

Most people I know who were taking a cluster ended up dropping it at some point. Also, my main reason for doing honors was the priority enrollment, which has now been rescinded, so I know a lot of people dropping that too. I don’t want to discourage you, but I personally didn’t find the honors to be worth the extra work… Also, make sure not to pile things on for fall quarter, cause the workload is really a step up from high school. If you do decide to take on ump-teen units, at least wait till winter or spring when you have a better grasp on things.

Also for the college of letters an science there is a 19 unit cap, which CAN be extended with some extra paperwork, but that’s just asking for GPA punishment.

Alright, I think I’m going to take the GE cluster for fall quarter then drop it for winter. And just to make sure; if the entire cluster would fulfill 3 GE’s, I’ll complete one of my GE’s by completing one quarter of the cluster correct? Or do I need to take the entire cluster to get the GE units?

each quarter counts as a GE - your DPR will show which quarter satisfies which specific GE. or it might be listed somewhere.

GE clusters really don’t have much of a point any more, the sole thing they offer is having a nice continuity of subject matter/classmates for the year, but their only remaining perk is the 15 honors units. it’s easy enough to get honors units without it through 89 addons or honors collegium courses… so forget the cluster. you can get through the writing I (and later writing II) requirements better on your own time, anyway.
