I think I read that you needed to have a minor in Arts & Sciences. Can you have a minor in another college like the Biz college? S didn’t hear anything about a minor at BB.

Does UHP count as a minor?

Does UHP count as a minor?

From the undergrad catalog in the A&S section:

III. Minor or Second Major

A minor (or a second major) is required for most students. See the requirements for majors and minors as listed in this catalog.

So, it depends on the major.

And…this was asked earlier…a second major counts as well.

If your son does pre-med…he could probably easily do a chem minor or a “new college” minor.

UHP is not a minor…CBH is.

I actually meant ihp, but I have a feeling that can’t be a minor either.

Can you minor in something from another college like Culverhouse?

Yes…I’m pretty sure that is allowed. Have you checked the undergrad catalog for your son’s major and its requirements?

[University of Alabama Undergraduate Catalog 2010-12](<a href=“Page Not Found | The University of Alabama”>Page Not Found | The University of Alabama)

IHP isn’t a minor either.

A minor generally has 18-22 credits where 6-9 credits must be upper division. Spanish has some additional req’ts for a minor, I believe.

New College has a self-designed minor option
[Self-Designed Minor | New College](http://www.as.ua.edu/nc/new_college_minors/self_designed_minor/index.php)

I can relate to other posts being concerned about all the requirements, S at this point is doing- ihp, uhp, premed & he needs a minor for his A&S Psych major. He was thinking of something in the biz school like marketing.

I think something will have to give- either pre-med or ihp. He is starting with Span 103, so another whole year needed on top of that for ihp and the 2 ihp requirements. Plus taking precal so, another year needed on top of that for premed or biz. Doesn’t look like a lot of space to fulfill major & minor requirements. Hopefully he doesn’t have too many core classes to complete. Hopefully first semester will help him decide.

He is coming in with 29.69 credits(strange calculation). Do you need 30 credits for sophomore status? Do you get early reg benefits by being a sophomore? Looks like he will be a little short.

The benefit one receives for credit hours comes in the form of registration for classes or housing. Of course, it is a very nice benefit to have. The more credits one has, the earlier one can register for classes/housing in future semesters.

ldinct, the great thing is that your son doesn’t have to decide right away. I will say that the 10 week study abroad requirement for IHP is something that has to be planned very carefully when having multiple majors/minors.

*He is coming in with 29.69 credits(strange calculation). *

???

What is giving that odd .69 credit???

Upon looking at it again he received 3.96 credits from the photo essay class he took at UCSD. We were glad that he received the credit although it does seem strange that its not 4 and it would also be better if it was classified as Fine Arts. Can we “petition” the registrar for both?

So, that gives him 29.96 credits by my calculation once APs are in (fingers crossed). When do AP credits get posted? Does that make him just under sophomore status? Is that going to hurt him with spring course reg?

The registration guidelines for this fall give a higher priority to honors students who already have 22+ credits (not including courses in which one is currently enrolled), so he’ll be fine.

AP credits should post sometime in July.

Upon looking at it again he received 3.96 credits from the photo essay class he took at UCSD.

I know what the problem is.

UCSD is on the quarter system. Credits from schools on the quarter system will transfer in this odd way. Most of the UC’s are on the Quarter System. Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer quarters.

*When do AP credits get posted? Does that make him just under sophomore status? Is that going to hurt him with spring course reg? *

AP scores will come out very soon. They will be sent electronically to Bama within a few weeks. At some point, Bama has to “upload” that electronic file into their system. (like when you open an email and download an attachment.)

This shouldn’t hurt your son too much for fall registration because the cut-offs aren’t by “year”.

For example…this was how honors kids registered for this fall.

MAR 22 7:00 AM Students with priority registration with greater than or equal
to 82 earned hours

MAR 22 1:00 PM Students with priority registration with greater than or equal
to 47 earned hours

MAR 23 7:00 AM Students with priority registration with greater than or equal
to 22 earned hours

MAR 23 1:00 PM Students with priority registration with less than
22 and greater than 0 earned hours

MAR 24 7:00 AM (non honors/non athletes) Students with greater than or equal to 125 earned hours

and so forth…

So, if they follow a similar criteria this fall, then your son falls in the greater than 22 credits group.

The non-honors kids register after the honors kids.
