Applying as a Civil Engineer

Maybe…
They only take CR and Math for the SAT, and you are right about there for that (1335 average for the college of engineering for 2009 (haven’t seen the new profile)), but your GPA is definitely on the low side, but Cal Poly takes 9th grade into consideration too, so if you did well freshman year that could help. As far as the rest of it, Cal Poly really doesn’t consider ECs.
Your best bet is to get that SAT up as much as you can to make up for the low GPA.

For Fall 2010 Cal Poly admitted engineering freshman stats:

Avg GPA = 4.03
Avg ACT = 31
Avg SAT = 1372 out of 1600

Given your stats, and not to discourage you, I would say Cal Poly is a reach for you. I would suggest you pick a safety school while also applying to Cal Poly.

Oh. So freshman through junior year grades count?

Unweighted GPA (9th-11th) = [3.5]

Weighted GPA (9th-11th) = [3.66]

This still puts me on the low side right? Do I have a particularly good/medium/low chance of getting in to SLO?

What about the other CalStates like Cal Poly Pomona etc.

I think you have a pretty good chance. Going by stats for those ENROLLED for Fall 2010 into College of Engineering, your SAT (1330) is above average. Your GPA is low though, so I agree with NBrink, try to get that SAT up higher. Course RIGOR also counts, so if you really want to increase your chances for CPSLO, you might want to add an extra CC course in something like Calculus for the Spring semester. CENG likes lots of higher math classes. Even a transferrable CC course in a GE like Psychology, Economics, Speech, or History would increase your RIGOR score. 1 semester of a CC course counts as much toward course rigor as a whole year AP course.

Good Luck!

College of Engineering Fall 2010
Applied 8,866
Selected 2,943
Enrolled 913
GPA 3.97
ACT 29
SAT (CR+M) 1287

I think the logic of your math might have a problem. Using enrolled instead of admitted engineering freshman students’ stats to gauge the probability of admittance exposes your logic to adverse self selection bias.

Majority of the enrolled CP engineering freshman could all come from 1 particular segment of the sample on the left hand side of the bell curve, hence, purposely biased.

Conversely, the University’s Admitted engineering student average reflect the true intent of the selection criteria. Remember that, if there is a left hand side of the bell curve, there is also a symmetrical right hand side (i.e. the admitted stats are even higher than the average given).

I wasn’t trying to make any kind of fancy statistical analysis. I was just pointing out that the OP has a higher SAT than the average of newly enrolled freshmen in CENG this year. Given that fact, clearly many students with an SAT score lower that the OP’s were offered admission to CENG. That should be encouraging to the OP who is asking for opinions about their chances for admission.

I would say reach. Civil engineering is one of the most popular majors there so competition is really high.

But you have a chance. Good luck.

hey im applying to cal poly as a civil engineering major too and i have an unweighted of about 3.8 and weighted of 4.25 and an act of 30 with 33 math and some people have told me that it might be a stretch so it will be close… cal poly is turning into a tough school to get in to

^^
This is what I keep hearing from people when I mention my daughter is a freshman there
.

californiaCanuck^ I think you have a good chance of getting in. I hope that you have a lot of high level math and some AP or cc classes. That helps with your rigor score. Your ACT is good and so is your weighted GPA. Good luck to you!
My son is there and he loves it!

@2leashes… yeah i think cal poly is finally being accepted as a legitimately good and tough school even though it’s a cal state

@momofmv… thanks,i have taken some AP’s and high level math classes, your replies are really helpful
