Is choosing a semester schedule with a day without a single class a recommended option? Please only reply if you have first hand experience with such a schedule.

My concern is that while I could spend such a day reviewing and studying (This is especially true if the class-free weekday is midweek), I might also be tempted to slack on that day.

I’ve always had one day off during the week, so far. My first semester I had Tuesdays off, which I really didn’t like. It was just an odd day to not have class. The second semester, I had Fridays off, which I liked. I would usually sleep until 9-10, do some homework, and then enjoy the rest of my day off. I wish I could always have Fridays off! Knowing that I didn’t have class on friday made the weeks go by faster and i always had something to look forward to. Unfortunately, I’ll have classes M-F this fall, which I’m absolutely dreading. Most students want at least one no class day a week. I think it’s a good thing.

It always depends on your personality. If you’re the type of person that procrastinates a lot, a day off might not be the best thing for you. One semester, I had Thursdays off and while i did do some work during my day off, I never wanted to go to school on Fridays and my day off actually led me to skip a few Fridays. However, I think if I would have been able to get either Mondays or Fridays off it would have been a good thing for me.

I’ve had Fridays off a couple of times, I always thought it was nice to get a long weekend. Of course, I never have much choice with my schedules… classes fit where they fit, so days of the week depends on what I need/want to take.

I took 17 units this past semester. I had classes from Tuesday to Thursday. No Monday or Friday. Tuesday I had classes from 8 am to 5:30 pm. Wednesday I only had one class, from 6 pm to 9 pm. Thursday I had classes from 11:10 pm to 9:10 pm. I received a 4.0 gpa, so it is definitely doable. I would be very tired after my classes on Thursday, which led me to have Friday as an “off” day to rest without doing any school work. I liked my schedule, but I doubt I would do it once I’m a junior or a senior. It was nice having a long weekend and I used Mondays to just study all day if I had a test the next day. Most of my tests were scheduled on Tuesday, so having Monday off helped me.

I’ve had Fridays off all but one semester, and I loved it. I like to use them to get errands and other things I don’t usually have time for out of the way. Besides, a three day weekend is always nice:)

It was weird but the one quarter where I had a weekday without a class, it was my best quarter. I would try to schedule it so that you get Monday or Friday off so you get three-day weekends. As long as you have the motivation, you can really get a lot of stuff done on that day off.

I’ve always had classes Monday through Thursday…I’ve never had a Friday class. I like this schedule, because it gives you a longer weekend, and you don’t necessarily feel as bad about slacking off on Friday as would on a Wednesday or something.

I’ve had Fridays off for 4 out of my 6 semesters at school, and I absolutely prefer having a weekday off to having class M-F. In addition to what everyone said above about having time to relax and get work done, if you have a job on- or off-campus, having an entire weekday free could definitely make scheduling hours a lot easier. You could work for that entire day, and then not have to worry about working during awkward breaks between classes or after class. Either way, I would say go for it!

I had Tuesdays off two quarters ago and it was awful. I literally never got a single thing done that entire day. It really depends on what type of person you are, though. I’m someone who needs something to get me out of the house early in the day or the entire day will go to waste. If you’re someone who can get studying/work done with a day off, it could be a great option. I personally will never do it again if I can help it.

I’ve done it and most of my friends end up doing it! The biggest thing people try to do at USC is get no Friday classes. (I’d imagine it’s the same elsewhere.)

One of the colleges I looked at didn’t even have classes on Wednesdays.

Anyways, last semester I only had one class on Wednesdays and none on Monday or Friday. I really liked it, but I worked M/W/F, so it wasn’t a wasted day.

I’ve never had a day off, I’ve always had at least 3 classes everyday(sometimes 7!) but I love it! I think having a day off does encourage laziness but maybe thats just me.
