A100 again

Unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, my son will have to take A100 again. He dropped on Monday morning as soon as he was cleared to do so but all classes are full for next semester (even though some openings were showing online). Now he is waitlisted for four A100 classes that will fit with his schedule. It looks like 1st half is out of the question in terms of numbers waitlisted. He is #4 for one class second half. What usually happens here? I'm sure there are lots of others in the same situation.
Thanks.

My guess is that some of the other students "hedged" their bets and signed up for this course in case the first midterm (second half classes) didn't go so well.

Since the first financial payments for the new term are due by December 10th, anyone who is signed up for next semester, but who isn't planning to take the course, needs to drop no later than that date or make the first payment based upon the one unit extra in the schedule.

However, this only applies to those who are already at the 17 unit or above limit. Otherwise they have until the end of the first week of classes (in January) to drop. (Hopefully, they will drop on a timely basis even if they don't "have" to as a courtesy to the other students trying to get in.) I suggest you wait until December 10th and check to see if you son has moved up. If not, then I'd contact his counselor or have him contact the professor (prior to the end of finals week--which I think is the 14th) to see if there is a way to get added this next term.

P.S. The good news is that A100 isn't needed right away to get into Kelley. The bad news is that it is needed no later than the end of the 1st semester of the sophomore year in order to take A201 and A202 in the 2nd semester of sophomore year if one plans to enroll in I-core in the 1st semester of the junior year. (And this is kind of mandatory if your son is either an accounting major, a finance major, or wants to get into the Investment Banking program). You can take I-Core in the second semester of junior year if necessary (my son will be doing so), but this really only works for those in majors that don't require a whole lot of upper level courses. (Finance requires 9, accounting I believe is 7, while management and business law only require 5).

Thanks. Can students sign up for classes they are already taking? My son was told that he had to have his drop approved by his advisor BEFORE registering for the class next semester. He tried to do this on Sunday night as soon as he received his grade but kept getting error messages. By the time it was cleared on Monday, nothing was left.
On one hand, he wants to take it again right away while it is still fresh, on the other this is going to be a tough semester for him and he wants to do well in all his classes. Maybe he'd be better off taking it in the beginning of his sophomore year. I've heard rumors that someone other than Tiller might be teaching it then...I assume that would be good, but you never know. How are A201 and A202 relative to A100? His advisor had suggested that he take A201 at a cc.
My S is not considering IB or Finance...and clearly not accounting. His current prospect is management with lots of sports management classes.
He seems to be doing well (A to B) in other courses including Bus Presentations, Intro to Bus, Psych, Geology but will be taking M118, Eng (131), K201, along with Intro to Sports Mgt and a Communications course next semester. Thanks for your continued advice.

Yes, the rules are tougher for freshmen than for sophomores (as far as getting approval to do things from the counselors). In theory, you are not supposed to re-enroll for classes you are already taking, but the software allows you to do this as long as you don't need the counselor to approve it also.

Since your son doesn't need A100 for at least another semester, he could just sign up for the class to be taken in Fall 2008 and plan to get the A201 and A202 classes taken during the following one or two semesters--or you can see if the classes open up before the Friday of the first week of classes (last day to add a class). As far as the classes he is scheduled to take next semester, the tough ones are K201 (Computer class) and M118 (Calculus). The grading is tough in English also, but the class itself doesn't require quite as much in the way as homework (at least not for most students).

I'd say he could handle it--but it probably doesn't hurt to get into Kelley first--and then take the class.

This way it doesn't hurt his chances for Kelley--or for possibly making Dean's List during the first year.

Best of luck to your son with his classes--and his choices.

Thanks. He got in off the waitlist for last 8 weeks next semester. I think maybe he should stay enrolled for right now and see how he is doing in other classes during the 1st half of next semester. If he is feeling overwhelmed, he could still drop before the class starts with no W--right?

Yes, that is correct.

Figured I’d “bump” this post again for those interested in comments about whether to continue to take or not continue to take A100 at the midterm point.

As indicated in another thread, I suggest you continue–but only if you are absolutely sre you will pass the course. And as you can see by my comments in this thread, it is not necessary to take the course right away–as it is not required for admission to Kelley.

Good luck to everyone taking this extremely tough course.
