My freshman son, not a direct admit to Kelley, is currently taking Intro to Business, K201, Geology, Speech and apparantly on track for the type of grades he needs to be making for admission.

He called me, and says that he must be the last person at school not to have gotten next semester's claases, and that he has only secured Finite Math and A201 for next semester. Not sure what else he is trying to get, though I believe he said that the required freshman english class he wanted could not be had...which sounded odd to me if required. His advisor is out sick and says to call after Thanksgiving, which he fears is too late to fill out his schedule, or at least a schedule that he needs to stay on track.

Is it out of line for him to seek new advisor, is that sort of thing even done? He would like to take care of this ASAP....Any thoughts from those who have been through something like this would be really helpful. And we'll get Purdue next year.

I just checked the ENG W131 openings for Spring 2009 and there are a lot of openings at many times on MWF starting at 8:00 am and starting at 3:35 pm and after. Your son needs to take this class this semester in order to apply to Kelley during Spring 2009. It is required to apply for Kelley.

I don't know if it is a good idea for him to be taking A201. It is a very difficult class, and freshmen tend to not do very well in it. It is NOT required for entrance to Kelley anyway, so taking it so soon would be a big gamble. If he did well in it, it would be a nice feather in his cap; but if he did poorly, it could hurt him getting into Kelley. A very big gamble, and an unnecessary one. I assume he has already taken or is taking A100? He needs to pass A100 with a 'C' or better to sign up for A201; otherwise he will not even be allowed to take A201, and may be wasting a slot in his schedule by signing up for A201 if he has not passed A100 yet.

Great that he has taken K201 and Intro to Business. He definitely needs finite or calculus to apply to Kelley, so taking Finite next semester is definitely the way to go.

He really does not need any more business classes to take to apply for Kelley. He might want to take E201 Intro to Microeconomics, to get that I-Core pre-requisite out of the way. There are way over 100 openings for E201 on TuTh 9:30AM - 10:45AM and 12 openings currently at MoWeFr 8:00AM - 8:50AM. A tough class, but if he does well in it, it will look good on his application and eliminate him having to take so many I-Core pre-requisites as a sophomore.

He probably should not consider taking any hard classes except W131 and Finite (both of which he absolutely must take to apply to Kelley in Spring 2009) and maybe E201. I would take two or three (depending on if he takes E201) easier distribution option classes to make 15 hours next semester. He needs 26 hours minimum to apply to Kelley, so taking only 12 hours in Spring 2009 is probably not an option for him if he took only 12 or 13 hours in Fall 2009.

Do you live in Indiana? You can also take some tough classes needed for Kelly at Ivy Tech next summer after he gets into Kelley. Among these would be calculus, business law, and micro- and macroeconomics. The Ivy Tech grades would not affect his IU gpa. They would also be taught in classes of ten or twenty students, as opposed to two or three hundred plus at Bloomington.

It is good that he has a spot in Finite and A201. He will have completed 3 of the 4 classes required for admission. (He did finish A100, right?) He does still need to fulfill the ENG requirement to be able to apply.

Re: ENG-W131, there are still seats available. Unfortunately many of them are at 8am. Here's the link:
Indiana University Course Browser

I can't find the link, but I think ENG-W170 also fulfills the requirement. Can someone confirm this?

Two other ICore prereqs also appear to have seats available. ECON 201 and X220 (only a 2 hour class). Your son may want to fill in with a gen ed requirement also.

I would advise your son to register for a full load and then confirm with his adviser later. The longer he waits, the less choices he will have.

Agree with Illinoismom. X220 would be very good to take 2nd eight weeks instead of one of the three credit hour classes. It is graded very easily and would be another I-core pre-requisite that he won't have to fit into his schedule next year.

Also, it might be good to take Intro to Psychology, as it has openings still. It counts for the N&M requirement, which would be complete since he is taking a geology class this semester.

He could get a schedule like

Math M118 (3 cr.)
Psych P101 (3 cr.)
Eng W131 (3 cr.)
BUS X220 (2 cr.)
ECON E201 or an easy elective (3 cr.)

This would give him 14 hours and put him over the 26 minimum required to apply to Kelley.

Last I checked, P101 (02:30P-03:20P MWF) and ENG W131 (03:35P-04:25P) met back-to-back and still had openings.

And if your son hasn't taken A100 yet..he might wanna do that if he wants to graduate
on time, as you have to take A201 and 203 before you can do Icore.

Actually it's A201 and A202 your son will need to take to get into I-Core, not A201 and A203--small typing error by radonOmega. These accounting courses can be found under the Business section in the Schedule of Classes.

P.S. I agree--I think it's great how everyone helps out quickly.
