Aaja J Camp

so i was reading over the application and it says that i need 3 copies of all materials.
problem is, i only have one copy of my teacher's rec letter
i've been trying to contact her over the weekend and hopefully my reply will come soon (i'm on spring break all this week)
but just out of curiosity, does every have three original copies of their rec?

oh shizzles... .i forgot about the copies TOO!!! AHHHH! :(((((((

i wrote a "sorry" letter with additional copies, but even though it's heartfelt, it seems a bit sappy. i'm not sure how the tone of such a letter should be.

i'm freaking out now... D;

makelightning, all you need to do is just make two additional copies of your teacher's recommendation letter. The reason they want three sets of material from you is to save them time to make copies to hand out to more than one reviewers. Your material will be reviewed by more than one person and extra copies will come in handy.

What kind of content do they look for in the essays? I know you have to be yourself, but do they look for impeccable vocabulary? Accomplishments? Originality?

thanks for that, christian2 :]
i called aaja and it turns out it's fine if you just make copies of it
so don't freak out, proviso
i'm sure it's all good :]

I just found out about j camp while trying to find a summer internship and it sounds amazing! I know other have previously asked these questions, but i just want to know the median gpa that people had who were accepted. I just think being accepted to such a camp would convince my parents that there are other great occupations in the world other than being a doctor or engineer.

And how great of a student must you be to be accepted?
What types of clubs other than the school newspaper/literary magazine?

thanks makelightning.
I heard it’s pretty prestigious. 42 spots for 500 applicants. Ahhh i wanna get in so bad too! good luck to everyone.

heymelam, this is a very competitive program because it is all expense paid. They normally have from 500 to may be 700+ applicants for 42 slots. It is also one of the rare program that accepts from freshmen all the way to juniors. The preference is given to the rising senior (junior before the summer). No one knows how great your chance is because it depends on the competition with the others in the applicant pool. My recommendation is to apply and do your best in writing the essays.

thanks christian2

by the way, are all of your parents supportive of the fact that you want to choose a career that doesn’t have a high starting salary?

My parents aren’t supportive at all. They shudder at anything without a six-figure salary. They’ve already discussed me being an anesthesiologist, doctor, patent lawyer, and now they like the idea of an orthodontist.

:) Ah well… isn’t a part of a teenager’s job is to be rebellious?

also, christian2 as a past participant of AAJA do you think it inspired you to pursue journalism (assuming that you did)?

It is actually my son that participated two years ago at the J-Camp at the University of Miami. He was very much in journalism and ended up being the Editor-in-chief of his high school’s newspaper during his senior year. He is now a freshman majoring in Business. But journalism is still in his blood as he is volunteering to write articles for his college’s newspaper about once or so a month. He found out that in J-Camp you really do not need to be a journalism major in order to have a career in journalism. As a parent, I will not mind at all that he end up has a career in journalism. I do not think one shall base on how much money one can make in chosing a career. You need to be happy at what you do and at the same time able to contribute to the good of the society that you live in.

Yay, I got in! After all that waiting! Did anyone else get their acceptance letters through e-mail?

I didnt get in =(

hey weut.
how magnificent are your grades?

rejected :frowning: ahhh still next year eh?
weut- how were your essays/rec letters/ECs?

Hopefully someone will be able to reply to my comment…
But um… do they require SATs? I’m going into 10th grade, and I was really really interested in applying for the summer between 10th and 11th… but I would’ve only taken my PSATs?
Does being on the school newspaper help? And if so, should I mention that I was awarded an award that basically said I was the hardest worker on the staff and wrote the best quality articles (THE ONLY award that was given out by our newspaper at school)… and that I was made Head Staff Writer as a FRESHMAN and SOPHOMORE and most definitely the EIC for 11th and 12th?

Carin, good for you to want to apply to J-Camp next year. It is a very good program and is getting harder and harder to get into. PSAT score will be acceptable. Do not worry about whether you can get into the program since you have no control of that. Just apply and try your best in your application.

I’m not sure if you’ve done the application or not… but what is on it?

this sounds interesting…does anyone kn ow how competitive it is? what percentage of applicants get accepted and whether this is something that top colleges know about and value?
thanks
