Carin, my son did the application several years ago. I believe you have to write two to three assays. Check back with the AAJA web site by Feb. next year to get the application. You shall spend some time in writing good assays.

highhopes2013, this is a very competitive program since it only selects about 42 students and is all expense paid. There were usually several hundred applicants for the 42 slots.

ooh ooh me! i applied. if you go on youtube and search j camp, i’m the girl rocking it out with the plastic guitar. sigh i hope i get in too. i’ve dealt with too many rejections already, and i can’t describe how much getting into jcamp would mean to me. good luck to all the applicants!

Um. I’ve been looking through some of the j camp submission videos and none of them seem very well done. I feel like the videos are hurting the application instead of helping it - just my perspective. A lot are really quiet and stuttery and it seems slipshod. Anyone else feel the same way?

Not really sure about the videos. Didn’t submit one myself.
Out of curiosity, did you guys apply to any other journalism camps (as backups)?
And when do we exactly find out about decisions? I think last year it was early May right? Not sure about this year though…

No. I couldn’t find any other journalism programs similar to AAJA in terms of prestige/quality (like ones that actually require a degree of merit), except that Princeton Summer Journal but they have a ridiculously low net income maximum, so I can’t apply to that. I applied to science internships at the NIH, Drexel GWC Internship, Jefferson Lab Internship (They turned me down because it’s not for out-of-state), HSHSP, and Penn SAAST. I’m not going to go to SAAST if I get in; I probably won’t get into NIH or GWC because they take mostly college/upperclassmen. If I get into HSHSP, I might go but I’ll have a hard time deciding if I get into AAJA as well. Is the Journalism program at Brown any worthwhile? It’s taught by a pulitzer prize winner… hm. I might want to apply to that. Oh, for Journalism safeties, (like if I don’t get in anywhere), I’ll probably just do the Indiana one.

Wow Carin! You applied to tons!
Did you apply to Northwestern’s NHSI? I’m not really sure if that one’s good or not. (Got accepted but kind of have hopes on J-Camp.)

Well, seeing how they have a huge infestation of little baby angels on campus, it might be cost a lot. However, the program costs $4,700. The deadline to apply was March 26.

Let’s bump this up. This camp is amazing and people need to start posting more because I’m sure there’s more people on CC that applied to J camp!

Got a confirmation email. But it tells you surprisingly little about when results will be released or whatnot. It’s quite hard to make back-up plans because they don’t give you a date.

what confirmation email? was it the one they sent automatically to you minutes after you sent in your app? i didnt get anything from them other than that one…
