I was wondering, if I am admitted to department A, is there any way I can take one or two courses in other departments 'for fun'? I assume they would be electives, but does this generally happen at USC?

Thanks!

im almost 100% certain you can take other classes in other departments for credit...

Yea, in fact USC encourages students to take courses in different departments/majors. There is a cap on the number of courses you take in the Cinema School/Marshall/etc.. if you aren't majoring in the applicable major. The cap, however, is quite generous.

BTW, it is refreshing to read a thoughtful/appropriate question for a change! All the speculative questions that have littered the boards recently have made me a bit snarky. :)

Ah glad to hear I can. What part of the USC website is this sort of thing on? Does anyone have a link?

sfgiants: I am trying to my mind off scholarships by thinking about other things at USC, so I made this thread! :P

I just realized I phrased my question wrong.

I meant to ask if you can take courses in different school than the one you were admitted to. For example, could I take a course in Cinema-Television if I was admitted to Viterbi?

As well, is it possible to do a dual major or major-minor in more than one school? For example, some major in Viterbi and then a minor in Cinema-Television?

Thanks!

The answer is yes to your first question, but there is a cap on the number of courses you can take in certain professional schools (Marshall, CNTV, etc)

I can only speak with certainty about Marshall in that you can take up to 5 courses without being admitted to the Marshall school (for a major or a minor) This isn't necessarily freshman admission, if you are an Engineering major and you want to minor in Business you just fill out an application, meet some requirements, and you are "admitted."

I'd imagine the policy is similar with CNTV. You can take a few classes, but you can't minor in it unless you are admitted to the school.

For specifics you can read through the USC Catalog for the specific schools, such as this page: http://www.usc.edu/dept/publications/cat2006/schools/cinema/minors.html

here is a list of undergraduate Minors http://www.usc.edu/dept/publications/cat2006/undergraduate/degree_programs_minors.html

Hmmm. I could have sworn my daughter was told that she could minor in Cinema/Television as a student in the College of Arts, Letters and Sciences. She mentioned that she would like to do that on her application. I hope it is possible.

She can if she's accepted, but it's not guaranteed.

From the link I posted above

A student attending USC may apply to minor in cinema-television if he or she is maintaining normal degree progress. Applications are accepted year round.

Application Procedures
To be considered for admission to the cinema-television minor program, an applicant must submit the following materials: (1) CNTV departmental application, (2) academic records, including current USC transcripts, (3) personal statement.

Applications and admission information can be obtained from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Office of Admission, Carson Television Center, Garden Level, Room G-130, or telephone (213) 740-2911 or online at cinema.usc.edu.

Yeah, you have to apply to be a CNTV minor. But it's significantly easier than applying to be a CNTV major, lots of people are CNTV minors. And yea, you can do combos like major in Viterbi/Marshall and minor in CNTV.

sfgiants: what is this "cap" of which you speak? you mean the limit of 40 upper division units in any department?

Nah, here is one example from the USC Catalog

USC students who have not been admitted to the major or the minor in the Marshall School of Business may complete a maximum of 20 units from the Marshall School of Business and/or the Leventhal School of Accounting. No further course work may be taken unless a student is admitted.

Thank you sfgiants and jbusc. You two should really be on the usc admissions payroll, you've been very helpful.

Haha, so true. Yeah, thanks guys, you've answered my question perfectly.
