about interview

just out of curiosity, does the person interviewing me know about my stats(gpa, sat, ecs..etc)?
I'm applying for engineering btw.

no they dont know anything about you besides your name and the college you are applying to.

and the major

and your address and phone number and whether you're ED

some do know your general grades though...i read that froma college prep book thing, but maybe it changed in the past 5 years or something.

and also, these interviews, for cornell, are not suppose to be evaluative

i thought someone might find this useful. these are the guidelines given to interviewers, and has some suggested questions. it also says explicitly not to ask for your gpa, sat and etc., which presumably means they are don't have and shoudln't be interested in this data.

Well, time to shower since I have my interview in 1hr15 mins...And after reading that guide he violated the guideline of not conducting it in their home, but whatever...

thanks for that site simplyso.

LOL mikeyc.
and that is a gooood link!

but to the OP, don't worry too much about it. it is really not an evaluative thing. use it as an opportunity to learn more about cornell and get excited (like you wanna before you get rejected lol jk). have fun!

i still dont get which school needs you to have informal interview????

so.....the interviewer does NOT know the stats on the application forms??
what about my essays?? have they read that?

no they dont read anything of yours. this should be obvious but you should bring a resume to give to your interviewer at the beginning.

.ssssdsdsdsdsdsd

I thought I'd bring this up having just finished my interview.

My interviewer was far more concerned with who I am, he didn't ask for any prior information. It was a brilliant interview though; :) don't worry about it, just be yourself.

The interview itself is more concerned with giving a human face to the applicant. The only prior information my interviewer had was my prospective major and my name. I did take along a one-page CV though.

I have done alum interviewing for Cornell. With two exceptions (see below), interviews are non-obligatory and non-evaluative.

Alum interviewers are volunteers. The local CAAAN chair (another volunteer) will assign you an interviewer, generally based on your location and/ or your prospective school, if at all possible. Still, it's pretty random. When there are as many apps. as there are this year, you may not be assigned an interview. The alum will call or e-mail you to see if you'd like an interview and if so, when. If you're not assigned an interview and it feels really important to you to get an interview, go to one of the local meetings that are happening in Jan. or Feb. for Cornell applicants; let them know you don't have one yet and you'd really like one. The regional chair will try to make sure you get assigned one, if it's possible, as you've shown that you're truly interested.

Your interviewer will know your name, gender, school, Cornell school you're applying to, prospective major, contact info, ED/ RD, and when Cornell processed your app. That's about it. No GPA, no essay, no scores, nada. You don't need to bring a resume. Just be yourself.

The interview is a chance for you to ask questions and for you to put a personal face on Cornell admissions. It's an opportunity to bring up something new or something that there wasn't a place for in your app.

When the interview is over, the alum will fill out a 150-word contact report. It is read by the Admissions folks. I don't think it's given much weight, but it could conceivably be a tie-breaker perhaps.

EXCEPTIONS: If, however, you are applying to the Hotel School or certain major(s) in the Architecture School (I can't remember which), an interview is required. It will be assigned through the school, although it may well still be an alum. In these cases, I believe you will be given the contact info and told to get in touch with your interviewer.

Good luck to everyone with all your applications and don't stress this one.

just had a cornell interview...and he seemed to know some other things about me besides the basics. He asked what my GPA was and talked A LOT, which was okay, because most of it was interesting, but heads up to people still to have their interview.

He knew that I had been in basketball before (a REALLY minor part of my app), so its safe to assume he must have known more about me. Interview's not that bad though. Even though I stumbled through it, at the end he said that he really did hope I got in to Cornell and that I seemed like a bright, "straight-flight" person.

Good luck to all future interviewees!

i thought that the Cornell interviewers didnt send any evaluations at all back to Cornell and that the interview was absolutely NO part of your application...

So the interview does actually count for admissions (even if its weight is small)? I think I was given wrong info...

Yeah, I know the interviewers do send evaluations back for sure.

my interviewer asked me what college I applied for.

I heard from someone saying that Cornell does telephone interviews? Is this true?
