I'm sure there have been plenty of threads on social life, but I want to get a good feel for the social life of U of M. I've been accepted a few places and now I need to make a decision. I care about academics, but I also want a place where it won't be insanely cutthroat and I could ask a classmate for help without them thinking I'm trying to take their #1 spot (high school all over haha). I also want a place with parties and student activities with no racism. Does Michigan sound like the place for me? If so please explain!

You seem to have a two-part question: cooperation in the classroom and parties/social life.

Ross (Business) is notorious for being cutthroat and competitive. Most other schools are very cooperative (especially engineering). LS&A can vary. A lot of the students in LS&A just don’t care about studying but the ones the do are usually willing to make a study group.

Party scene gets a 4/5 mainly because of the tough academics. Michigan’s unofficial motto is “work hard, play hard (sleep little)”. While there’s no blatant racism that I’ve seen there’s a lot of white middle-to-upper class students who come from metro Detroit where the racial diversity is very low. So what I would say is that most people are unfamiliar with interacting with under-represented minorities when they arrive on campus (except Indians and Asians).
