Soo... I, procrastinating as usual, am only just starting on my National Merit Scholarship Application and just barely looking at starting the essay.
BUT
The question is: is it bad to put "undecided" as my college major and my career? Because I truly am undecided at the moment. However, if I have inclinations toward one major/career/whatever, should I just put that? Because most people change their major/don't have it finalized at least until around sophomore year of college. So I wouldn't be lying, but I just don't know if I'm going to stick with that major/career or not.
ALSO, if I do go ahead and pick a major to put on the application, will this limit the scholarships that I'd be eligible for?
Eh, any advice will be appreciated :]

Btw I must turn this silly thing in tomorrow, lol.

I really don't know the answer to your more specific question (scholarship one), but I will say that nearly everyone at my school who's getting semifinalship is putting undecided for the school, some for the major/career, and all of our decisions at this moment are rather tentative anyway (especially the career one, haha).

From what I can tell, it seems rather expected that we have no definite idea for what we want to do (but maybe a somewhat vague one for what we want to study), so I wouldn't expect them to look down upon you or anything.

I also don't think 9erm, kind of contradicting my opening comment here) that putting down something will limit your scholarship options, because, well, for one, you can always change it, and for another, they won't consider you for anything until you've put something down (or so I would imagine -- I don't think that they have you temporarily qualify for all the parental company scholarships, for example, if you don't put anything down there).

Lol doomster thanks. I'll get back on the computer later, lol I'm about to go eat some dinner. haha.
And yeah, disney, our school is crazy. They don't have to send it in til Oct 10 I think, so idk what the big deal is.

Yeahhh I haven't looked at that yet, lol, but usually when they ask us that stuff it's just like "what are you leaning toward AT THIS MOMENT"; it's definitely nothing committal. So it wouldn't hurt to put something that you're just considering.

It's a non-factor. It's just for statistical research purposes. I put "Music" on mine just to **** off the "smart people" and still made Finalist.

Yo I just started filling this crap out (due Monday) and I HATE it. Everything is worded sooo ambiguously. Now I know why only 15000 of the 16000 semifinalists become finalists: the other 1000 get frustrated with the application and never turn it in.

Question -- for your first choice college, are you guys putting schools that are sponsors, or just any college that is your first choice? I.e., does NMSC notify the colleges that they're your first choice even if they don't give money to NMFs, or is it only relevant to those schools that do give money?

^Don't put a college yet unless you are SURE you want to go there, and SURE that you'll be accepted. Because if you end up getting a scholarship through NMSC for that college that you put down, and you change your mind, you can't try for a different scholarship. It's better to put undecided, then mail them the postcard that's like "I changed my mind from undecided" once you get accepted to a college and want to go there. lol.

^ I think there is a thread with cutoffs in the SAT/ACT section (esp. for CA)

I still don't understand what NSMF is itself? It's cutoffs for SAT's?

(Before you say, "omgomgnooblearn2useg00gle", I'm honestly quite lazy to look up something right now and instead of creating a thread or anything I'll just appropriately ask here.)

Imavoyeurable - It's the National Merit Semi-Finalist status that 16000 people get in the US. It received by getting over a certain PSAT score [different cut-off for each state]. then you fill out an application [personal info, activities, awards, job, etc stuff like that, and an essay ~500 words] to see if you get to be a finalist. If you get National Merit Scholar, idk less than half of the finalists get this, then yay, and you can get some scholarships and stuff, lol.

"It is your responsibility to apply and be admitted to the college you plan to attend."

Wow. NMSQT people expect so much. If you don't get in to the college, you don't get the scholarship? Then, how can anybody put down a college that is both their FIRST CHOICE and ONE THAT THEY ARE SURE THEY CAN GET IN?

Geez.

If your first choice is a non-sponsor, should you just leave it "undecided" and be in the running just for the $2.5k scholarship and give up the sponsored ones?
