I've been hearing about how boring (but laid back) UCSD is! Is this really true? Is it really the antithesis of UCSB in terms of social life?? If yes, does anybody party?
I'm really looking forward to going to a school where there is a nice balance between academics and social life. For example, I hope to party at least once a week!lol! Can I find this at UCSD?

Yeah, I heard this as well, and also that UCSD has a lot of commuters, which makes me shy away from the school. I'd love to hear responses as well.

if you're that worried, why don't you guys just visit UCSD and see for yourselves? everyone's different so everyone's definition of "fun" and "social" varies.

It's around 7+ hours drive away and I'm not even sure I got in >.>

well if you get in and it's time to choose that one college, best thing is to go visit all the colleges :) trust me..it's a great way to help you decide. i live in the OC, but went up to Davis on a plane to visit the campus, because i had a hard time choosing between SD and Davis.

No, it's not socially dead. There are many on campus organizations that you can join to talk with people and have fun. To think that "socially dead" people tend to matriculate to ucsd is stupid. Yes, people DO party here. They smoke hookah too.

esp. if you're in a frat or sorority. that is some heavy-duty partying

if social life == parties/drinking...my suitemate is a huge partier and joined pike our first quarter here and loves it. join a frat and there will be more partying/drinking than most can handle. the other benefit of joining a top frat here is that there are sorority/frat exchanges, which means partying with all of the hot girls at ucsd. this is vice versa for girls too. to date, i haven't met anyone unsatisfied with the social life at ucsd.

what i love about ucsd is that i always meet really cool people who love to party and have a good time, but also are focused on academics. for me, it's the perfect balance.

if you're not socially dead, you'll eventually find people who are also not socially dead.

Socially dead is fine with me as long as I get in. I'm going there for the sciences.

science people here are really nice from my experience and they seem to socialize more than you would think...

it's dead until you turn 21!!!!!!! :-P

At the main time, traveling to Mexico is always an option.

You prospective first years will only be able to go conveniently to Mexico for about a quarter seeing as they've postponed the Passport Req until 2008.

As for social life, just join a frat that piques your interest like I did. Just be sure you can handle everything you take on in UCSD because a lot of my friends are currently getting screwed up the ass for partying too much.

Be very careful going to TJ right now. There have been some very serious and dangerous incidents recently involving organized crime. If I were you I would stay away! (Mexico City and Acapulco too)

I think I am the only person at UCSD who has yet to tread across the border...so I guess I really won't go now..thanks for the info collegemom

I haven't either, and I wasn't planning on it, even before this extremely scary piece of information. Now I'm DEFINITELY not going over!

I heard there are Mexican banditos scoping out vulnerable foreign American tourists to rob them. And also, when your in Mexico, you're not protected by American law anymore. Your now a foreigner in a foreign land, and I doubt the Mexican police really cares what happens to some lowly American tourists down there. Like the American police, I bet there are lots of corrupt police down there also.

Mexico is a very poor country, with lots of poverty, and with poverty comes crime. If you go, it would be best to go as a huge group.
