About Transferring...

Hey guys,
I'm gonna be starting at a college in Southern California this fall, and while I do'nt mind it, I always loved WashU (visited it last year) and I'd still lvoe to go here for undergraduate. However,I did terrible in HS (3.2 gpa w/ all APs) and while my SAT I of 2150 and decent ECs such as debate captain was good, it wasn't good enough. i've resolved to turn over a new leaf and work in college. If i can pull off a 3.9-4.0 in college, take my SATs over if i have to, and just get good recs and a good essay, what do you think of my chances?

I always wanted to go to Wash U, but when I didn't get in I didn't want to stop trying either. I'm going to slu for the year/semester. Then i'm going to see if my grades can get me in. Hang in there. Is there anyone who knows what the transfer acceptance rate is?

yeah i'd really like to know, plus how mcu hemphasis they put on college grades...

Is it stuid to transfer as a spring 07' student. If i am a freshman now?

The transfer acceptance rate is about 30%. I just got here as a junior transfer and I love it! I think a lot of emphasis is placed on college grades, but that could vary from situation to situation.

ok that's good. im just worried that they wouldn't view 1 year as enough to show improvement. also, should i retake my SAT I?

I think that would depend a lot on your situation. If you're transferring after one year of college work and you feel that your score is low, it couldn't hurt to retake it to see if you can raise it. Otherwise, if it were me, I wouldn't.

I read on the website that they only accepted tests that were taken during high school.-also, sorry top repeat myself, but do you think it unwise to transfer spring 07' If i am a freshman now?

Kjanebarnum-Just curious, did you have to read the incoming freshman book and participate in the orientation activities?

I did not have to read the freshman reading program book. There are activities going on this week that are designed primarily for transfer students, so I've been going to those, as well as a couple that were for all incoming students. It's been a really great experience so far.

I am transfering as a junior for fall 07. I have a 3.1 from depaul and

3.7 from loyola of chicago. They average in about 3.5. I last attended

school in 2001. I had to take off time to take care of a ill parent and then

started in the real estate business. I am ready to back. I like a new school.

I went part time at loyola and withdrew from many classes because I

had not known at the time I had a disability called asperger's syndrome. It

is hard to imagine that I had this for thirty years (adult student now) and

remained undetected. I intend to disclose this in my applications. I am taking

a language at a local community college. Do I have a chance at washington university

as transfer??? What is washington's acceptance rate?

I was incredibly surprised by how high WUSTL's transfer rate is. According to collegeboard.com I believe it's around 32-33%. I've also heard WUSTL likes transfers from community colleges and gives out scholarships specifically to those students.

Wash U is incredibly easy to get into as a transfer

remember this, transfers by nature are not as competitive as freshman aps, and think of this, a 30 percent rate w. transfers, it's easy (understatement)

Thanks collegekid, we appreciate you making our achievements seem like crap! :)

Well I agree with collegekid on that one...although I obviously haven't been accepted yet, compare a 30% transfer rate (with a weaker app pool) to a 20% freshman acceptance rate with incredibly strong candidates being turned away. Transferring is the way to go and 30% at a top 20 school is really awesome (which includes Emory and Chicago).

Who says that transfers are a weaker pool? I disagree with that.

i plan on transfering for fall 07 if i had a 3.9 gpa and a not to great ACT score, but i do really well this semester in college do i have a chance?

whats up guys im new here.

I'm transferring to WashU myself, and its wise that if you didnt do so hot in high school cus you were too lazy that you stay at your current college for 2 years. During those 2 years you take courses that are transferable to WashU and try to mantain a gpa of 3.5 or above. The reason that you want to go 2 years instead of a year or a semester is that so WashU can really see how big of a improvement you made from high school and into college. They wanna see that you're ambitious and willing to do hard work to get into WashU. I think that if you were just an average student, or even a below average student in high school, and you take the time to do well in a Community College or another University, and have a good GPA, by the time you send in your transcript (both high school and current college) WashU are gonna raise their eyebrows, "wow this kid is really determined to go here". Well what I'd do right now is call WashU and ask for a transfer guide to see what courses transfer...then go from there.

OH I almost forgot.... They only take your ACT/SAT scores from high school, so if you plan on retaking it... DONT. you'll just waste your money and time, and brain power.

well, i didn't do bad in high school. i think i did okay. hopefully 1 semester will be enough to get me in because i HATE this school already! Their art program is not good and I need to leave.

kjane - take a look at the transfer acceptance threads on here for certain schools, and then look at the freshman acceptance threads. Or check out your best state school (UT) in my case. The people transferring in (or should I say applying for transfer) are generally considerably weaker.

Brand- So now we're comparing apples to oranges? State schools to top 15 universities?
