academic leadership...

I also posted this in the west point forum.

i know service academies really look at the leadership positions youve held, and especially like to see sports related ones. what about positions such as asb positions, or academic leadership (such as captain of my schools debate team, possibly all-american team captain)

are these held in the same light, or are sports just a cut above?

The Naval Academy admission process is based on a concept titled something like the "Whole Person Multiple". Basically, you get quality points for specific activities, performance, and other traits in many areas including academics, atheletics, citizenship, and work. As for leadership, more quality points are awarded if one is the president of a club and few points, if any, are awarded for mere membership. I don't know for sure, but I would suspect leadership on a debate team would be viewed very favorably. It would still be important to have athletics on your resume-- I think about 90% of midshipmen lettered in a varsity sport.

Several months ago, there was a post from an individual who was familiar with the admission process. The post provided a few examples of the points awarded for various activites. You might try a search.

Good luck.

thank you. by graduation i will have three varsity letters but no varsity leadership positions (i was captain of my 18u baseball team when i was 16)

If you have three varsity letters (nicely done, BTW), but no varsity leadership, but you DO have leadership positions in some clubs or activities, you'll be OK in that regard.

I know because that's precisely what I had, only with 2 varsity letters. ;)

Again, a lot depends on who you are up against the year you apply, and what mood your congresscritter is in when the nominations are doled out.

The very best thing you can do is to smoke the SAT/ACT and get your grades and class rank up as high as you can get them.

whoa
are you
re-enstated?????
:-)

Well, I ain't posting from the Great Beyond! ;)

Chillax, I would not be overly concerned that you have no leadership position on one of your varsity teams. Having a leadership position on your debate team and being a varsity athlete demonstrates your breadth as a person and will contribute to your "whole person multiple". I was not the captain of my American Legion baseball team (my high school did not have a baseball team), but I was class president, Boys' State, etc.

If there is any possiblity that you have the ability to play a varsity sport at the academy , I strong recommend that you contact the coach. Being a recruited athlete will greatly increase your chances of an appointment.

does anyone offhand know if a sub 50 quarter mile is recruit worthy. i know its good enough at many d2 schools but usna is the big time.

Call the track coach and ask. ;)

IF my GPA is 4.18, 3-4 Varsity letters by graduation. Most Improved once and Scholar Athlete once. SAT scroe Math 700 Reading 660. Petty Officer Second Class in Sea Cadets.Went to Seals training for sea cadets. Scuba diving license. CFA score Basketball 60ft, shuttle run 8.0, mile run 5:40, push ups, sit ups, pull ups all max, what are my chances of making into the academy?

YOMOMAISHOT,

You need to compare yourself to the profile for the class of 2010 to see where you rack up compared to everybody else:

http://www.usna.edu/admissions/documents/PlebeClassProfileClass2010.pdf

Your academics and athletics look great.

5:40 mile with seals training? that seems kind of atrosh

SEAL training for Sea Cadets is not BUDS. Even if it were, so what? 5:40 isn't bad by any standard.

For the record, the fastest I ever ran the mile was 5:45. Once. Right after Plebe Summer. Dear Lord, it felt as if I had rocket engines on instead of sneakers.

I can barely WALK a mile now. :(
