Academic Probation?

So...I got a really really terrible gpa for my first quarter and I'm positive I'm on academic probation. Is it bad that I haven't gotten an email? My gpa was below a 1.00...does this mean I'm going to get disqualified??? D:

You need to check with your department, but here is what it says on the Bren website.

"The Student Affairs Office will notify you of your probation status by email to your UCI account and U.S. mail to your permanent address, and will specify conditions that must be met to return to good academic standing (quarterly and cumulative GPAs above 2.0). "

Here is what the course catalogue says -

"ACADEMIC STANDING

To remain in good academic standing a student must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.0 and make progress toward the degree at a satisfactory rate.

An undergraduate student normally is subject to academic probation if at the end of any quarter the grade point average for that quarter, or the cumulative grade point average, is less than 2.0.

A student whose grade point average falls below a 1.5 for any quarter, or who after two consecutive quarters on probation has not achieved a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or a satisfactory rate of progress, is subject to disqualification."

Hope this helps - and I hope things improve for you in the Winter quarter.

When I landed on academic probation, the e-mail didn’t come immediately. I just checked my e-mail and I got the letter on April 21 when I failed a class during winter quarter. It does depend on your major. One of my friends found her way out of it by changing out of bio to undeclared. My other friend’s major required her to get above a 2.0 overall as well as classes that counted toward her major. Mine only required me to get a 2.0 overall. I talked to my counselor about something on my academic contract that said not improving could lead to “dismissal from the University.” She told me not to worry about that because apparently it was rare and they didn’t do that to students unless they were fifth years that were making no progress towards graduation. As for being dismissed from your major, you have to talk to your academic counselor about what they expect. My friends told me that they’d face dismissal after the second consecutive quarter on probation but I wasn’t dismissed from my major and I was on it for both winter and spring.

Good luck this quarter!

Bring up your GPA this quarter. Look to LARC, friends, outside tutors and get help if you need it.
