Hey everyone:

I understand that Academic WRI 102 is a required class that is writing INSTRUCTIONAL. I know that alot of people opt out of it but i'm wondering if there is any info someone can give me on the class. Possibly the pros and cons of taking it??? I will be a bio major next year and am wondering will med schools frown upon this "low" level writing course, or can i get something out of this?

Idn whether i should just take the placement test in the summer to try to place out of it bc i don't meet any of the other criteria to be exempted from it????

Any advice would be appreciated!!

can you only be exempt by AP test scores? or will high SATs also do it?

both are capable of getting you exempt

do you know specifics? like what score?

why do you have to ask for the specific scores? it is clearly outlined on TCNJ’s website. it took me about 2 whole seconds to find this:

The following scores will place you out of WRI:
■SAT scores of 580 or above in BOTH math and critical reading (Our data on TCNJ students indicates that high reading scores matched by high math scores are more effective predictors of college writing proficiency than reading scores alone.)
■An ACT composite score or 26 or higher
■An AP score of 4 or higher in English Literature, English Composition, US History, or World History.

Yeah, back in 2004, son had verbal of 630 but only 560 Math…
Took placement test in summer. Would have been complete waste of his time to sit through an instructional writing class.

Take the test and try to skip the class if you feel you would not benefit from it.

yea i dont have a high enough math sat score so i might try to take the placement test. I wonder if it’s difficult idn i m a really good writer have been taking ap/honors english all throughout high school just im not too good of a standarized test taker…

I’m a freshman at TCNJ, the writing class is not anything worth taking. I opted out of it but I’ve got friends taking it, and basically it is just another 4 credits towards graduating. Graduate schools won’t even look at it unless you bomb it, most likely.

and how do they perceive and like the class? I particularly am interested in possibly opting out of it in order to begin some extra classes in psy. I was wondering if it is possible/allowed to begin taking courses during freshman year for a double major? I plan on doulbe majoring in bio and psy.

Honestly, it may just be the teacher but I heard that the class is much more of a pain in the ass then anything. It’s a lot of essays and readings and stuff like that, each class had a theme, like food or sports, but if you could place out of it, id advise you to do so. If you have to take it, its not the biggest deal.

I am a psych major currently, if you have any questions on that dept. lemme know! I’m only a freshman but I’ve got research lined up already :)

well first off thanks for the advice and responses…I am an hs senior and going to tcnj as a bio major but i am also thinking maybe to double major in bio and psy not sure yet though. So right for spring semester if i could get out of wri 102 i was maybe thinking of taking intro to psy in order to see ho the psy department is? In your opinion, how is it so far and also is this allowed: to begin taking classes for asecond major during fresman year?

No problemo! Alright I used to be open options science but I was basically a bio major, and one of my good friends is one. A word about the bio program - its pretty tough and intensive here, probably one of the top programs we have here. So you’ll def. get your moneys worth if you can handle it.

As for psych, id definitely recommend taking 101, you need to anyway for the major and it is really a good indicator of whether or not you’d be interested in psychology as a major. I’d recommend Dr. Hohmuth if possible but you can’t really go wrong with anyone. I am not positive if you can just walk in and declare a double major, you may have to wait a little bit to officially declare one. But there’s nothing that says you cant take psych 101 if you’re not yet an official psych major! So take it and see!
