For the class of 2012:
COE: 29.14%
CAS: 18.35%

CAS class of 2013 admit rate was 16%

Is the rate for CAS lower because theres more applicants or because its tougher to get in? I remember seeing the sat average being slightly higher for COE.

The COE admits a lot of students because it expects to be competing with MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Mich, etc. for these applicants.

A sizable number choose to go to other schools and thus we need a higher accepted pool to fill the freshmen seats.

The admit rate for COE is higher because the applicants to COE are a self-selected pool. In other words, as a percentage of spaces available in COE, the number of applicants is lower AND the number of clearly qualified applicants is higher. This also explains why the stats of students admitted to COE are slightly higher than CAS. On the other hand, if COE is not a good fit for you, then it would be better for you to apply to CAS.
