I have the same questions about the University merit scholarship- basis?

i never got a call either, is that bad?!

I JUST got my call last night. Don't worry, I'm sure they're working on it. :D

1 Your major: vocal performance & music education (double major...music)
2. Your SATS or ACT: 720 verbal, 640 math, 680 writing
3. Your unweighted and weighted GPA: 3.95 (I think that's weighted...not actually sure)
4. Class rank: 7/77
5 Where you are from: Millis (suburbia!), MA
6. You two most prominent ECs.: um I guess directing my a capella group and singing at Symphony Hall.
7. Some info about yourself, what you like to do, dislikes etc.: I'm a huge music geek. Almost all my activities involve music - I'm in 3 choirs plus I do a lot of festival choirs as well, I work 30ish hours a week at a manager at McDonalds, and I have been in a lot of community theatre productions. I'm also in a few clubs at school, though I'm not an officer or anything.
8. Whether you will probably be attending Syracuse.: Maybe. They gave me $12,000/yr (Founder's Scholarship), but I'd rather go to BU (just got accepted but no scholarships! poo.) or one of the conservatories (haven't heard).

Accepted into Newhouse!
1 Your major: magazine journalism
2. Your SATS or ACT: 1890 (V620,M670,W600)
3. Your unweighted and weighted GPA: 3.9
4. Class rank: my school doesn't rank
5 Where you are from: westchester, ny
6. You two most prominent ECs: varsity athlete, leadership positions in numerous clubs, nylc, girl scouts, dance, piano...
8 Whether you will probably be attending Syracuse.: I might. I had my heart set on BC but I was denied so now I'm deciding among the schools I actually got into (mostly between Syracuse and Saint Joseph's). I think I'm leaning towards SJU but I can't get over how I was accepted into Newhouse. They only accepted 10% this year! I personally think they made a mistake with me, it seems a lot of more qualified applicants weren't admitted. Who knows where I'll end up?! :D

i think u should go to newhouse. 10%?!?!?!? and u were accepted! that says that they believe in you and have faith in your potential. i definately think you should go.

Well, we just found out that my daughter received no merit or scholarship money. Since we got a number of scholarship offers from other comparable schools, she won't be coming to Syracuse. End of story. Good luck everyone.

But what if Syracuse is the best school for her??

Fingerscrossed, if Syracuse stood out as "the only school for her and by far the best," she might go there nevertheless. However, I don't believe that there usually is one single best school that kids can benefit from and enjoy. She would be just as happy at other schools in which she received scholarship money such as Cincinnati and RIT et al.

Frankly, my daugher liked Syracuse, but she also liked other school's programs as well. Thus, it is not that compelling to attend Syracuse.

Also, I personally HATE the idea of paying full price for anything, especially when I am subsidizing others. I know this is done almost everywhere, but I don't like it. I can't control what Syracuse does, but I can vote my preferences with my dollars.

I should note that Syracuse could have handled this in a much smarter way. They could give everyone some scholarship money, even if it were only $2,000. This would make a lot of people happier and would be a very good business decision to do this. This way I wouldn't have felt that I wasn't being as gouged and paying full retail price. Sadly, this is not their philosophy, which is odd for a school that supposedly touts their business school.

Anyone out there still waiting to hear anything from Syracuse?

Understand Taxguy. It's a big pill to swallow. My D got $16k at Syracuse but, unfortunately, if she gets accepted to some other schools this week I am afraid that money will go unused. And she is unlikely to get money at these other schools. If your D is happy at other schools and they have given her money, makes sense to go there.

Not sure how the merit decisions are made. I assume they are trying to incent kids to go there whose stats suggest they might otherwise accept offers from higher tier schools. I don't know though.

where'd u get the 10% stat?

i got accepted into cornell. take that syracuse! ha! lol.

sorry, i had to get that out of my chest because syracuse rejected me and i was feeling very bitter because i really wanted to go there. but i think i'm over it now. everyone have fun at 'cuse!

wannagotocornell - soooo was syracuse right in assuming you'd probably get into and would probably choose a different school? :)

8. attending SU this fall

Matta2888 and Orange_010, my daughter had higher GPA but slightly lower SAT and didn't get any money. Go figure. I guess the merit awards are for high SATs.

well i got the founders award and my sat scores suuuuuuuucked.

Sorry to hear about your daughter taxguy. I've been recently disappointed with lack of merit too; from sneers George Washington University. You'd think they'd hook you up..with that crazy 50k tution+board. Guess I wasn't up to par...

50+!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
