THANKFULLY! I received my acceptance packet in the mail . I was thrilled that I got in. Any one else plan on coming here for the Fall 2006? If so leave a thread, and tell where u are coming from. I AM SO RELEIVED! Hopefully there are others out there that feel the same way.

I just sent my application in last week. Don't think I'll hear for a while. What major were you accepted to? And where are you from?

I haven't declared a major yet! But I am an instate student. i live about 20 minutes away from downtown charleston. I hope you will hear some good news soon. It took about a month and a half before I got my decision online, and about 3 days before I receivec my packet. GOOD LUCK, hope to see you there in the Fall.

I'm in!! I'm from New York

David...when did you apply and when did you get the acceptance? Have you visited the school? Tell me what you thought and what your stats are. Thanks.

We visited in August and again in February. Did you have any particular questions?
In Feb. we went over to Folly Beach to check it out - it's a pretty short drive to a cute little beach town with public access. I considered that a big plus , depends on how much you like the beach.
Of course I don't think you can beat Charleston as far as a great college town! Tons of shops, restaurants, and bars within walking distance of the campus. I also hear the Art festivals are great. Quaint beautiful campus with some nice Southern traditions. Weather was quite hot in August , but really nice in Feb.
One drawback we saw was that we could not find any cheap flights from Charleston so travel home would be pretty pricey. I guess the airport does not have great connections.

Thanks...we got a pretty good rate flying from Atlantic City to Myrtle Beach. Round trip for $230...not too bad. The drive from Myrtle to Charleston is an hour 45 mins. What did you think of the way the campus was set up. Is it all in one area or spread around the city? Were the dorms airconditioned? What did your son or daughter think of the students? Did you get a laid back feel or a more structured feel from them?
thanks...

We took the campus tour in late August and we saw a lot of students on their way to class and hanging out in the "quad" area ( not sure what they call it there). I definitely got the laid back feel. My D did say she saw some girls who looked kind of dressed up but I did not notice that - I saw a lot of shorts and college shirts.
When we went in Feb we were there on a weekend and the campus looked deserted - but we have found almost all campuses look like that on weekends early in the day LOL
We were not able to get into a dorm room on either visit. One of D's friends did get to see some on a visit and reported back that they were not too bad. My understanding is that most students live in off campus housing anyway.
The campus is pretty much close together- not spread around the city. It did not seem like traffic would be a big issue when going from building to building. Some of the prettiest parts are in the center of campus - around the honors building, My daughter loved that Old Southern look with the Spanish Moss hanging from the trees. It definitely has a different feel from most campuses - I think it is a place you would need to visit before choosing. From what I have read the students that attend are very happy with it so I guess that is a good sign.
Do you have a visit planned?

Thanks for all the feedback. And, yes, flying down on Tues. 4/11.

Got my acceptance today...how did you send your housing deposit?

Hi-I just wanted to address some of the comments in this thread. We are from southeast PA, my daughter is finishing up her freshman year at CofC and absolutely LOVES it! She says the girls wear dresses more there than up north, we also noted that the southern kids were dressed better when we did the college tour thing a while back. As for laid back, yes, it seems laid back, but I am comparing that with my son who is a senior at the US Merchant Marine Academy--not your normal college environment.

We were in Charleston last week, it was absolutely beautiful, and we didn't want to come home. Over Parents Weekend in the fall, we rented a cottage on Folly Beach and it was only 10 min into town (also off-season rates).

USAir is the only carrier that flies non-stop from Philadelphia, we have paid 300-400 round trip the 3 times she came home. However, they do run e-saver fares for about $158 usually once a month, but it's never worked out for her breaks. When she decided to go there we told her we would only pay for 1 trip home per semester and then Christmas, anymore and she would have to pay herself. We did drive her down in August and will go down to pick her up in May.

The dorms are about as nice as any I've seen at a college--mostly suites, with 2 bedrooms sharing a bath and living room a basic configuration depending on the particular dorm. However, she'll be in an apartment next year, most kids do tend to move off campus.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

KPmom...What is your daughters major? Has she found that campus is empty on the weekends? Flying down on Tuesday to check it out..still haven't paid my housing deposit (only accepted on Thursday) should I be worried? If I don't get on campus housing is it easy to find a place? What's the rent like off campus? Is there much crime that she's heard of?

My daughter is a vocal performance major, and she always has lots to do with her fellow music majors. Chorus is pretty demanding, right now they are in Hilton Head for a couple of days doing 'Brahms Requiem'. She also got a job as a staff singer in a church--most all of the churches in Charleston hire singers, the pay is pretty good. She looks forward to Saturdays as it's usually her downtime to catch up on stuff--laundry, shopping, etc.

There are a LOT of apartments available in Charleston, and many are listed on the school website here:
http://reslife.cofc.edu/offcampushousing/offcampushousing.html

I personally wanted her to stay in the dorms the first year, as there is at least a little control and someone to go to in case of trouble. Crime is not like it is in the northeast--you do hear of occasionally robberies, but it's said that the biggest crime on campus is bike theft, and my daughter knows of lots of kids' bikes that have been stolen. There are also the call boxes all over campus plus a security escort service for after dark. You should probably get a dorm deposit in ASAP, we didn't have a problem but sent ours in early March.
