Accepted at Duke, Rejected at CMU SCS

I'm feeling very depressed right now. I probably wouldn't have attended CMU if I had gotten in, but this doesn't bode well for Harvey Mudd, which I really want to go to.

It must have been my 710 Math that screwed me over.

you haven't gotten your Mudd letter? I got mine Friday, but of course I live 10 miles away. yeah I got rejected, good app apart from 740 on math I and 760 on math II.

these colleges are very unpredictable...

I wonder what is going on with CMU SCS. My son did not get in and had a great application (National Merit Finalist, paid internship in artificial intelligence, 2 years of Comp. Science AP's with 5's, 10 APs total by end of senior year, 800 SAT II, etc.). I wonder what is going on. I wonder if they had a huge number of applicants and cut the number of openings.

@mdcissp:

Tufts syndrome? I got waitlisted at SCS too.

My son was waitlisted for CIT. My husband does not want to pay 52k plus for CIT. He was not waitlisted for SCS. My son thinks SCS is awesome. It was a disappointment and I just don't understand what is going on at CMU admissions.
Plus, CMU takes kids from my son's high school. My son received great merit aid offers at other schools and is moving on from CMU. Even if
CMU thinks Tufts syndrome is going on, they can still wait list if you have a chance.

it's not tuft's syndrome.... get over yourselves... mdcissp's son has some good "stats," but it is no where near good enough to guarantee his admission.... this year is tough... i got into duke, northwestern, and cmu... then waitlisted at jhu... but i'm not blaming it on "tuft's syndrome"... give me a break

Meh, I got rejected at CMU and waitlisted at Hopkins. Surprised me since Hopkins is more selective than CMU, but I guess they're looking for different things.

At least I can be glad that there are other good students out there who deserve to go to CMU a lot more than me.

They are using the waitlist a lot. Plus people like me who got accepted might not go. So, those of you on the waitlist, please keep your hopes.

i got accepted and am not going either. i doubt cmu's yield will be good at all. i have a feeling that jhu cared more about SAT scores than ECs this year...

This is what happens when a college becomes full of itself...

I'll laugh my ass off when 80% of the students they accepted go to places like JHU and the Ivies instead.

By the way... last year's statistics: 34% accepted, but only 22% decided to go. (compare to 28% for Brandeis, 47% for Cornell, and nearly 70% for Princeton) That's pretty pathetic. Instead of aiming for students that will go to a better school, CMU should aim for the ones that would actually be willing to go there.

^^ maybe it's good i got waitlisted instead of accepted. no way would i have turned down duke, nw, jhu, berk engineering for CMU. so hopefully someone who actually wanted to go got in :)

I just wonder how many applicants there were at CMU for SCS and CIT. The numbers at other universities were staggering. If SCS needs more than what my son had to offer, then we are just moving on. Thankfully, my son has some wonderful offers and merit aid at other places. I just don't understand the decision. My son heard that SCS takes kids without any programming classes in high school and my son's application had 2 years of AP Comp. Science classes with 5's on both exams plus other computer sci. classes with A's in every class. He had extra curriculer related to comp. sci. as well. The competition must have been fierce.

It was fierce...they had over 21,000 applicants and only room for about 1360.

I am confused. There were 21,000 applicants for over all CMU undergrad or 21,000 applicants for SCS? I want to know how many applicants there were for SCS. If you know, thanks for the info.

Overall for undergrad, I don't know the breakdown...sorry for the confusion.

Admission Statistics

I think these statistics are for last year but you can use them as a guide.

Thank you frankchn. My son's stats are high and showed keen interest in computer science. I am guessing that this year's applicant pool surpassed last year's pool. However, with the current down turn in the economy, I am wondering how many people can actually afford over $52,000. a year at CMU.

I agree, unpredictable. It seems like all of you were stronger applicants than I was. I only had a SAT math score of 700, SAT II M2C score of 750 ... very little computer programming experience - just a year of AP Computer Science A, (which I'm taking right now), and I got waitlisted to SCS and CIT. But I'm also female, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

My impression is schools want to recruit females for engineering. Also, the accepted applicants for SCS on this forum seem to have their own computer related businesses and/or multiple talents (talented musician, etc.). I am happy for these accepted students and their parents. The accepted profile appears to be extremely high.
